The Gogo Payroll Manager is responsible for overseeing end‑to‑end payroll operations with a strong emphasis on SOX compliance, internal controls, and financial accuracy. This role serves as the payroll control owner, leveraging Workday Payroll expertise and a solid accounting background to ensure payroll transactions are accurate, auditable, and properly recorded in the general ledger.
Payroll Operations & Governance- Oversee accurate and timely processing of payroll in compliance with company policies and SOX control requirements.
- Ensure proper review and approval of regular, off‑cycle, bonus, commission, and equity‑related payrolls.
- Maintain documented payroll procedures, control narratives, and process flows.
- Enforce segregation of duties across payroll processing, review, approval, and posting activities.
- Prepare, review, and approve payroll journal entries in accordance with GAAP.
- Reconcile payroll‑related balance sheet accounts (wages payable, payroll taxes, benefits, accrued compensation).
- Support monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close activities related to payroll.
- Review payroll accruals and ensure accurate period‑end financial reporting.
- Serve as control owner for payroll‑related SOX controls.
- Execute and evidence payroll controls, including payroll register review and sign‑off, GL reconciliation reviews, variance analysis and investigation.
- Validate access and change controls.
- Maintain audit‑ready documentation for internal and external auditors.
- Respond promptly to audit inquiries, walkthroughs, and testing requests.
- Identify control gaps or deficiencies and lead remediation efforts.
- Participate in SOX risk assessments and control design discussions.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
- Oversee payroll tax filings, W‑2s, and statutory reporting.
- Coordinate with third‑party vendors and tax providers.
- Address notices and inquiries from taxing authorities.
- Manage and mentor payroll staff.
- Partner closely with Accounting, HR, Legal, Internal Audit, and External Audit.
- Support payroll‑related policies and training efforts.
- Drive continuous process improvement while maintaining SOX integrity.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- 5+ years of payroll experience, including leadership or ownership of payroll processes.
- Strong hands‑on experience with Workday Payroll.
- Demonstrated experience working in a SOX‑compliant or public company environment.
- Solid accounting knowledge, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Experience with internal controls, audit support, and documentation.
- Attention to detail, analytical skills, and risk awareness.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or CPA or public‑company accounting experience.
- Experience partnering with Internal Audit and External Auditors.
- Has supported SOX remediation or control redesign.
Base Pay: $76,000 – $95,000 USD annually.
Annual Target Short‑Term Incentive:
Bonus Plan at 10% of annualized base pay.
