Position: Solid Waste Floor Handler (22665)

Position Information

This is a professional position in the Intake Section of the Arlington County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Services Unit. The Court Services Unit is comprised of Intake, Juvenile Probation, Adult Probation, Argus House and Girl's Outreach. The Unit provides services to an ethnically diverse population, of whom 45% speak Spanish with limited English speaking skills.

Specific Duties
  • evaluating information and making judgments concerning children in need of services but who have not committed a criminal act;
  • evaluating information from complaints in domestic violence cases to determine need for emergency protective orders;
  • providing information to complainant regarding the court system or other available resources/services;
  • diverting cases from the court system to appropriate programs when possible;
  • researching local and state legal codes and determining appropriate legal charges for persons brought into custody; and
  • coordinating with other County, local, and state agencies and other interested parties in order to ensure appropriate services are provided and that clients comply with court orders.

The employee needs to have knowledge of the criminal justice system including court proceedings, and knowledge of causes of delinquent behavior and various community resources, particularly those dealing with substance abuse and mental health counseling. The employee must be able to interpret and apply regulations, guidelines and statutes.

Minimum Requirements

Permanent or limited term status in the Arlington County competitive service. Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field and one year of experience in probation, social work, crisis intervention or family counseling including at least six months of experience in a legal/court/probation environment.

Substitution

Additional qualifying related experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable
  • probation or intake experience in the juvenile and/or adult system;
  • interviewing experience;
  • experience counseling troubled youth and dysfunctional families; and/or
  • crisis counseling experience.
Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.

Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Additional Information

Work Hours:

8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

The official title of this position is Probation Counselor II.

Trainee salary range is from $40,268 to $66,580.
