Clinical Nutrition Specialist
The Clinical Nutrition Specialist facilitates and coordinates all phases of nutrition care including bedside nutrition assessment in area of specialty, nutrition diagnosis, interventions, monitoring and evaluating outcomes, and recommending appropriate pharmacotherapies. The Clinical Nutrition Specialist counsels clients/patients, conducts community and educational events, places feeding tubes, and manages parenteral nutrition as needed. The Clinical Nutrition Specialist performs duties to support continuous improvement plans and in compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) and other licensing, accreditation and regulatory agencies.
PrimaryAccountabilities
- Recommends or makes appropriate changes to the nutrition care provided to patients/clients, meeting the unique needs of patients with complex conditions as well as those in specialty area;
Initiates appropriate referrals to interdisciplinary team members. - Provides nutrition care on a regular basis in one or more areas of specialty and assists other members of the healthcare team as needed, providing nutrition counseling to patients with advanced medical problems, and utilizing specialty certification as applicable.
- Assesses for malnutrition by conducting Nutrition Focused Physical Assessments, and provides appropriate diagnosis based on available information and diagnostic criteria.
- Conducts community events, oversees support groups, and takes a lead in the development and implementation of community activities as needed; conducts outpatient education as needed.
- Identifies and implements appropriate actions designed with the intent of changing nutrition-related behaviors, risk factors, environmental conditions, or other aspects of patient/clients health status.
- Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of practice, and revises practices as needed to assure continuous improvement of services. This includes working with organizational committees.
- Applies knowledge of public health trends, audits and other data to professional practice and proactively develops programs, quality initiatives, and standards for the organization in area of specialty.
- Develops and implements in-services, education, and training to multi-disciplinary teams and dietitians, including precepting interns and cosigning intern medical record documentation.
- Manages nutrition support, including parenteral nutrition; inserts nasogastric and nasoenteric feeding tubes. Secures with nasal tube retention system when applicable.
- Carries out duties related to the specific development and execution of a proposal for quality improvement initiatives and related educational programs for clinical nutrition, supporting financial stewardship, patient safety and/or care efficiency as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Any one of the following:
- Bachelors degree If obtained prior to January 1st, 2024 OR
- Master's degree If obtained after January 1st, 2024.
Work Experience: Trained to place feeding tubes within six (6) months of start date.
Licensure: Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) licensure in the State of Florida.
Certification:
- Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) prior to start date and maintained.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintained.
- Any one of the following specialty certifications prior to start date and maintained:
- Commission on Dietetic Registration Board Certified Specialist OR
- Clinical Nutrition Support Clinician OR
- Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist OR
- Board Certified Bariatric Counselor OR
- Certified in Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian OR
- Registered Dietitian-Advanced Practitioner
Work Experience In Lieu of Certification: Three (3) months experience as a clinical dietitian, specifically in development and execution of a proposal for quality improvement initiatives and related educational programs for clinical nutrition, supporting financial stewardship, patient safety and/or care efficiency.
