Role SummaryWe are currently seeking a Sheet Metal Mechanic/Welder for our Melbourne prefabrication shop. The Sheet Metal Mechanic/Welder will be responsible for fabricating, welding, and assembling HVAC ductwork and related mechanical components for commercial and mission critical projects.
This position plays a critical role in supporting field operations by ensuring high‑quality prefabricated duct and mechanical components are produced safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Responsibilities- Determine the right tools and equipment necessary to successfully complete the job.
- Know industry relevant building codes and regulations for the installation and maintenance of commercial plumbing systems.
- Measure, cut and bend mechanical material.
- Attend all safety meetings.
- Follow instruction given by on‑site leadership.
- Cleaning the shop after the work is completed.
- Fabricate HVAC duct sections and fittings from sheet metal stock, including:
- Rectangular duct
- Round and spiral duct
- Transitions, elbows, and offsets
- Read and interpret shop drawings, fabrication details, and welding symbols.
- Use layout tools to measure, mark, and cut materials accurately.
- Assemble duct using Pittsburgh seams, cleats, and S & Drive slips.
- Lay out and fabricate custom fittings to required tolerances for field installation.
- Maintain airflow direction, gauge requirements, and duct construction standards.
- Perform MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and Stick (SMAW) welding as required.
- Weld and fabricate sheet metal ductwork and enclosures.
- Weld structural supports and equipment frames.
- Weld mechanical and HVAC support systems.
- Fabricate chiller, boiler, and hydronic piping components as applicable.
- Produce quality welds on carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum.
- Perform overhead (4G) groove welds in accordance with AWS D9.1 standards.
- Ensure airtight and pressure‑rated welds where required.
- Follow proper procedures for handling pressurized systems and HVAC components.
- Press brakes.
- Shears.
- Rollers.
- Plasma tables/cutters.
- Lockformers.
- Notchers.
- Spot welders.
- Hand seamers and fabrication tools.
- Follow OSHA safety standards and all Corvant safety procedures.
- Wear required PPE including gloves, hearing protection, and steel toe boots.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
- Coordinate with shop foremen and production teams to meet fabrication schedules and delivery deadlines.
- Work efficiently in a fast‑paced production environment while maintaining quality standards.
- 6+ years of sheet metal fabrication and welding experience in HVAC or mechanical construction environments.
- Experience fabricating commercial or industrial HVAC duct systems.
- Proficient in MIG, TIG, and Stick welding processes.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and isometric layouts.
- Familiarity with AWS welding standards, including AWS D9.1.
- Experience working with carbon steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, duct standards, and mechanical construction practices.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain tight tolerances.
- Welding certifications preferred but not required.
- AWS Welding Certification (D9.1, D1.1, D1.3, or equivalent).
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
- Forklift certification preferred.
- Indoor prefabrication shop environment.
- Exposure to welding fumes, loud equipment, and moving machinery.
- Fast‑paced production schedules with precision fabrication requirements.
- Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and repetitive motions.
- Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 50 pounds.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- OSHA 10 Certification required.
