Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by developing, implementing, and documenting a successful, comprehensive volunteer service program which both meets operational needs of the program and provides patient/family service in accordance with the interdisciplinary plan of care. To ensure safe patient care, trained volunteers will provide at least 5% volunteer time to paid staff time to remain in compliance with the Medicare Conditions of Participation.

Responsibilities

Primary Accountabilities

Quality/No Harm:

  • Fills volunteer requests for patient care services. Assesses, prioritizes, and initiates contact with family in order to meet service requests within a maximum of 3 days of receipt of request.

Customer

Experience:

  • Offers assignments to newly trained volunteers within 90 days of post-training interviews and offers assignments to 50% of the attending class.
  • Directs the development of appropriate recognition and motivational programs for volunteers to include annual volunteer recognition event.
  • Provides support and educational opportunities for volunteers to include annual mandatory requirements.

Stewardship:

  • Fiscally responsible. Assists with program fundraising as needed. Manages and monitors expenditures of volunteer projects to remain within the approved budget and increase growth within the program.
  • Documents volunteer activity as assigned patient care teams accurately, as defined by Policy 93 and guidelines as well as appropriate use of company software.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

  • Minimum B.S./B.A. (preferably M.S./M.A) in a human service field
  • Experience with a service organization in an administrative role, preferably volunteer related
  • Experience as a volunteer, as well as experience working with the elderly
  • An understanding and appreciation of the hospice concept and philosophy
  • Planning, organizing, problem-solving, and team-building skills
  • Supervisory/coaching experience and skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Interviewing and assessment skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Completion of hospice volunteer training within the first year of hire
Physical and Mental Demands

Physical Demands:

  • Good physical condition and without assistance must be able to lift, push, or move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work extended hours to see a project to completion.

Mental Demands:

  • Understanding of the concept of volunteerism and respect for the skills, abilities, limitations, and contributions of each volunteer.
  • Ability to handle emotional and physical stress that may be result of difficult patient/family situations, volunteers, co-workers, as well as time constraints, role conflict, or role ambiguity.
  • Ability to retain poise in unpredictable circumstances.
  • Willingness to adjust plans and work schedules to meet priority needs.
  • Ability to work effectively as both an interdisciplinary and an interdisciplinary team member.
  • Qualities of warmth, empathy, tact, and discretion, with ability to form effective relationships with patients/families, volunteers, and hospice associates.
  • Sensitivity to death and dying issues; ability to provide supportive environment and to facilitate discussions relevant to dying, death, and bereavement.
