RN Nurse, Operating Room Nurse, Surgical Assistant
Mission Health, based in Asheville, NC, is seeking a dedicated OR Registered Nurse to join our Healthcare & Medical Services department. In this role, you will be an integral member of a collaborative perioperative team, delivering safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care before, during, and after surgical procedures. You will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that each patient receives high-quality, compassionate care in alignment with Mission Health’s commitment to improving the health and wellness of the community.
As an OR Registered Nurse at Mission Health, you will provide comprehensive perioperative nursing care, including preoperative patient assessments, intraoperative circulating or scrubbing responsibilities, and postoperative support as needed. You will verify patient identity and surgical site, review medical histories and consent forms, and help prepare patients physically and emotionally for surgery. In the operating room, you will manage the sterile field as a circulator, facilitate communication between the surgical team and other departments, advocate for patient safety, and ensure all necessary equipment, supplies, and implants are available and functioning properly.
Depending on experience and assignment, you may also serve as a scrub nurse, directly assisting the surgeon and maintaining strict aseptic technique.
Key responsibilities include:
- Monitoring and documenting patient status, vital signs, and responses to anesthesia and surgical interventions.
- Administering medications and treatments according to provider orders and organizational policies.
- Promptly recognizing and responding to changes in patient condition or emergent situations.
- Using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems to document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and in a timely manner.
- Collaborating closely with the broader care team to coordinate preoperative and postoperative plans, support safe patient handoffs, and participate in discharge planning when appropriate.
- Educating patients and families regarding surgical procedures, postoperative expectations, pain management, and follow‑up care.
This position requires strong critical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. You will collaborate closely with the broader care team to coordinate preoperative and postoperative plans, support safe patient handoffs, and participate in discharge planning when appropriate.
Ideal candidate:
- Compassionate, detail-oriented Registered Nurse with strong communication skills, professionalism, and a commitment to patient safety and quality care.
- A current, unrestricted RN license and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification are required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and CNOR certification are highly valued or may be obtained within a specified timeframe after hire.
- Prior operating room or perioperative experience is preferred, but motivated nurses with strong acute care experience and a desire to specialize in surgery may be considered and supported through orientation and preceptorship.
Mission Health fosters a collaborative environment emphasizing teamwork, respect, and professional growth. You will be encouraged to share ideas, participate in performance improvement initiatives, and contribute to the development of best practices in perioperative nursing. Opportunities for ongoing professional development include continuing education, specialty training, and potential advancement into leadership, educator, or specialty roles within the perioperative service line.
This full‑time role offers a competitive annual salary, comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement savings options, as well as eligibility for performance-based bonuses. The work environment is primarily on‑site within the hospital’s operating rooms, with potential for limited hybrid elements related to education, meetings, or remote documentation depending on departmental needs.
By joining Mission Health as an OR Registered Nurse, you will have the opportunity to advance your nursing career while making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients, families, and the broader Asheville community.
