Systems Technician

Position Summary

Performs supervisory instrumentation/electrical work in support of the Authority's maintenance program. The work involves supervising and performing the diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of electrical, electronic, electrical‑mechanical and similar equipment, appliances, instruments and devices. Experienced workers initiate their own daily assignments, follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations.

• Supervises staff: assigns and reviews work, and takes actions to adjust work, staffing and operations to meet requirements.
• Recommends selection of new employees, trains and evaluates staff, and takes appropriate actions to improve performance when necessary.
• Initiates actions regarding hiring, transfer, promotion, payroll, leaves, performance and other personnel actions.
• Responds to and diagnoses water/wastewater system problems, deficiencies, and alarms (SCADA system, generators, motors, variable frequency drives, radio communications, instruments, controls, telemetry circuits, and electrical systems).
• Responds to and diagnoses facility problems, deficiencies, or alarms (HVAC, power, lighting, telephones, security systems, fuel dispensing equipment, electric gates, radio systems, fire alarm systems, and computer systems).
• Responds to customer complaints including problems related to system operation, pressures, odors, and grinder pump failures.
• Prioritizes, schedules, and distributes department work assignments.
• Performs and directs electrical equipment repairs, instrumentation repairs, and control system repairs.
• Performs and directs maintenance and repair of a network of over 100 remote computers reporting station status, alarms, flows, levels, and water system control.
• Attends meetings on proposed new equipment.
• Responds to telephone, climate control, and lighting problems. Serves as Freeze Practitioner.
• Adjusts controls to daylight savings time.

Performs other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques of the instrumentation/electrical maintenance field, and of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; of effective techniques of supervision.
• Skill in the use of the tools, equipment, and materials of the field.
• Ability to supervise and perform electrical, electronic, electrical‑mechanical, and similar maintenance efficiently; to train others in the work; to keep records and prepare reports; to communicate effectively; to work cooperatively with others.
• High school diploma or GED, and completion of specialized training in the instrumentation/electrical maintenance field.
• 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the field.
• Valid Commercial Driver's License, Master Electrician License.

The work is regularly active with periods of heavy exertion, and is performed in shop or field settings and outside. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 60 pounds; climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding; bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl; reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects; feel the size, shape, and temperature of items;

and operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.
