Position Description

Facilities Maintenance Mechanics perform a wide variety of skilled maintenance and repair duties involving electrical, locksmith, HVAC, plumbing and other trades for assigned facilities. This position performs lead duties providing technical work direction and guidance to assigned personnel. Work is performed in an indoor environment and requires lifting, climbing, working in poorly illuminated and confined work areas and from heights. An employee in this position may be subject to chemical fumes and asbestos, electrical shock and fire.

Graduation from high school or vocational school and two years journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of commercial mechanical systems including complex heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems, boilers, and other related systems.

EPA Certification Type I and Type II and Low Pressure Boiler Operator’s License or the ability to obtain.

Methods, materials and tools used for the mechanical repair and maintenance of buildings and related equipment. Detection and repair of a variety of building defects and equipment failures. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Record-keeping techniques. Health and safety regulations. Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

SKILLS:

Perform a wide variety of skilled maintenance duties involving electrical, locksmithing, HVAC, plumbing and other trades. Perform building maintenance duties utilizing a variety of tools and machines used in the trades. Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches. Operate a variety of welding equipment. Lift object weighing up to 75 pounds. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Appointment is subject to passing a background check and a pre-employment medical exam and drug screen. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 483. An employee in this position will be required to join the union within 30 days of hire. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
