Position: Equipment Operator I - Streets & Stormwater

Under general supervision of the Streets & Stormwater foreman, performs semi-skilled manual labor and operates a variety of light and moderately heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of municipal streets, grounds, and other City property as designated. It may be necessary at times to work through normal lunch and break periods to restore drainage ways and/or roadways. It may also be required at times to work unscheduled overtime based on operational needs Performs other work as required.

  • Operates a wide range of automotive vehicles, power and hand tools, including but not limited to, power tools, chippers, mowers, trucks, chain saws, drills, street saw to make utility cuts, large loader, and other related equipment.
  • Assists the garage personnel in preventive maintenance of equipment and performs routine checks of fluid levels, etc.
  • Performs a wide range of laboring tasks as designated under the category of Maintenance Worker.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and/or complaints in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Flags traffic as necessary.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. (Proof of education must be uploaded with application).
  • Experience in semi-skilled manual labor and in the use and operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class B Commercial Driver's license with air brake endorsement. Applicants who possess an out of state Class B commercial driver's license with air brakes must obtain the Florida license within 10 days of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.
  • Knowledge of operation and routine maintenance of moderately heavy equipment
  • Skill in the operation of equipment in rough, uneven, or slippery ground conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work regularly scheduled hours.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to hear, speak and understand conversation in various tones of voice, as well as accents or fastly spoken.

    Use of senses, which include sight, smell, hearing and touch as aids in the basic evaluation of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Ability to see, read, and comprehends letters, numbers, words, characters, or symbols, which are both large and small.
  • Ability to use small hand tools which require the use of hands, wrists, and fingers.
  • Ability to stand in a stationary position for more than 30 minutes at time.
  • Ability to walk continuously for more than 10 minutes at a time throughout the working day and walk up and down stairs.
  • Ability to sit for more than 30 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull items which weigh up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain, inclines and declines, up/down stairs or ladders.
  • Ability to carry items for a distance which ranges from 10 feet to no more than 300 yards.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry items which are considered awkward to grasp or hold on to.
  • Ability to lift items (weighing less than 15 pounds) up to chest level or down from chest level.
  • Ability to hold items (weighing 1 to 10 pounds) for a period less than 10 minutes, without putting the item down.
  • Ability to stay in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position for periods less than 10 minutes.
  • Ability to go from a standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling, or squatting position, or vice-versa, periodically.
  • Ability to move back and forth and sideways while in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position.
  • Ability to learn simple tasks and remember how to complete tasks without
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles, load or unload vehicles with objects weighing no more than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to see and work at night in dimly lit conditions as necessary and during inclement weather.
  • Ability to work in undesirable conditions including dust, dirt, fumes, odors, noise, wetness, humidity, chemicals, welding flash, hot and cold.
  • Ability to work in small, enclosed, or partially enclosed areas, at levels higher than three feet, and around equipment which may generate electricity and repetitive noise.
  • Ability to operate City vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
