Special Education/Reading Teacher – High School
Starting Date: Aug 31, 2026
Job DescriptionTitle: Special Education/Reading Teacher – High School
Salary: $58,956.22 to $ in accordance with the Melrose Public Schools Unit A Salary Schedule.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Special Education; additional training and/or licensure in reading preferred.
- Knowledge of current Massachusetts Frameworks expectations for Reading and Writing across the curriculum.
- Deep understanding of scientifically based reading research and evidence‑based practices for teaching K‑12 in literacy and math; knowledge of best practices for assessing student progress toward achievement of standard.
- A minimum of 3 years of successful teaching experience.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) and fingerprint check.
- Must be willing to pursue SEI endorsement.
- Reports to:
Building Principal and Educational Team Facilitator.
Work Year: In accordance with the Melrose Education Association’s contract.
Salary/Benefits: In accordance with the Melrose Education Association’s contract.
Demonstrated abilities and responsibilities include:
- Write clear and targeted Individual Education Plans.
- Develop and maintain systems to monitor overall student progress and specific progress toward achieving goals.
- Knowledge of Aspen student data management system helpful but not required.
- Plan sequential units of study, individual lessons, and learning activities based on relevant curriculum frameworks.
- Use assessment results and knowledge of human development to identify appropriate teaching strategies and learning activities.
- Identify appropriate reading materials and resources to promote learning for all students.
- Plan strategies for integrating students with disabilities into general education classrooms using IEP information.
- Apply instructional planning, materials, and engagement approaches that support diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Deliver effective instruction.
- Communicate clearly in writing, speaking, and through visual and contextual aids.
- Employ a variety of content‑based and content‑oriented techniques, ranging from direct instruction to discussion, problem solving, cooperative learning, and research projects.
- Accurately measure student achievement and progress, and use results to plan further instruction.
- Record student work evaluations to convey achievement levels to students, parents, and personnel.
- Create and maintain a safe, collaborative learning environment that values diversity and motivates students.
- Meet professional responsibilities per teacher contract and supervisors.
- Maintain interest in current theory, research, and developments and exercise judgment in adopting valid findings.
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve instruction, assessment, and student achievement.
- Actively involve parents in their child’s academic activities and communicate clearly with them.
- Reflect critically on teaching experience, identify professional development needs, and remain receptive to growth suggestions.

Job Requirements- Must have knowledge and experience with formal programmatic and systematic reading programs and instruction.
- Current Massachusetts licensure in subject matter required.
