Title: Anticipated LTS Special Education Teacher
Salary: $115.00 / day (varies with experience)
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in a content‑specific field
- Knowledge of elementary‑aged social‑emotional development and explicit/implicit instruction of those skills
- Knowledge of Massachusetts Frameworks expectations for reading and writing across the curriculum
- Deep understanding of scientifically based reading research and evidence‑based practices for teaching K‑5 literacy and math; knowledge of best practices for assessing student progress toward standards
- Teaching experience in a special‑education setting preferred, especially pull‑out experience for significant special‑education needs related to behavior
- Excellent communication skills
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) and fingerprint check
- Must be SEI endorsed

Work Year: In accordance with the Melrose Education Association’s contract

ResponsibilitiesPlans Curriculum and Instruction:
- Plan sequential units, lessons, and activities using content standards
- Use assessment results and developmental knowledge to select appropriate strategies and activities
- Identify reading materials, resources, and writing activities for all students
- Determine prerequisite skills, concepts, and vocabulary needed for learning activities
- Set clear objectives and measurable outcomes
- Collaborate with colleagues, families, and community to enhance learning
- Incorporate technology and media
- Use IEP information to plan integration strategies for students with disabilities
- Support diversity by using inclusive materials and approaches
Delivers Effective Instruction:
Extends and Completes Lessons:
- Assign homework or practice that reinforces learning
- Provide regular feedback to students on progress
Evaluates Student Learning:
- Measure achievement with formal and informal assessments and use results to plan further instruction
- Translate evaluations into clear records for students, parents, and staff
Manages Classroom Climate and Operation:
- Create a safe, collaborative environment that values diversity
- Develop an appropriate physical setting and maintain standards of behavior, respect, and safety
- Manage routines with minimal instructional loss
Promotes Equity:
- Encourage all students to believe effort leads to achievement
- Work to promote achievement for all students
- Assess student differences and adjust instruction accordingly
- Help students understand civic culture and their role in community
- Collaborate with families to support learning at home and school
Meets Professional Responsibilities:
- Understand legal and moral responsibilities
- Convey enthusiasm for subject matter
- Stay current with theory and research, applying findings in practice
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve instruction, assessment, and achievement
