Position

Summary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our accounting team in a fast-paced contingency fee law firm. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the month-end close process, assisting with settlement accounting, and providing backup for day-to-day bookkeeping functions as needed. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in both transactional accounting and general ledger accounting and thrives in a high-volume environment.

Responsibilities

General Accounting
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Perform monthly bank, trust (IOLTA), credit card, and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close.
  • Maintain general ledger accounts and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare financial reports and account analyses.
  • Review financial transactions for accuracy and compliance with firm policies.
  • Assist with budgeting, audits, and other accounting projects.
  • Identify process improvements and strengthen internal controls.
Settlement Accounting
  • Assist with recording legal settlements and settlement-related transactions.
  • Reconcile client cost recoveries, referral fee allocations, and settlement disbursements.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records supporting settlement activity.
  • Ensure compliance with trust accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Provide backup and overflow support for bookkeeping functions.
  • Record accounts payable invoices and process vendor payments.
  • Assist with accounts receivable and client payment postings.
  • Prepare bank deposits and record cash receipts.
  • Process credit card transactions and expense reimbursements.
  • Assist with payroll entries and payroll reconciliations.
  • Maintain vendor files and supporting documentation.
  • Help manage daily accounting transactions during periods of high volume or staff absences.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience
    , preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Experience with legal settlement accounting is a plus.
Required Skills
  • Proficiency in Quick Books (Enterprise experience preferred).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including:
  • SUMIFS
  • IF statements
  • Data validation
  • Financial reporting and data analysis
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and bookkeeping principles.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive financial information.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a contingency fee law firm.
  • Knowledge of trust (IOLTA) accounting.
  • Experience with legal case management software.
  • Experience with high-volume accounting environments.
