Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the financial operations of our contingency-based law firm. The ideal candidate will have prior law firm experience and a strong understanding of accounting processes unique to the legal industry, including trust/IOLTA accounting, contingency fee tracking, case-related cost accounting, and partner reporting. This role works closely with firm leadership and plays a key role in financial oversight, compliance, and strategic planning.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee all financial operations, including Operating, Trust/IOLTA, and other firm accounts
- Maintain and reconcile all bank accounts and lines of credit
- Manage accounting related to a contingency-fee practice, including tracking case costs, settlements, and disbursements
- Prepare and present monthly financial statements and reporting for firm leadership and partners
- Manage the general ledger, monthly closings, and journal entries
- Oversee accounts payable, including vendor and case-related expenses
- Conduct financial analysis to support business and operational decisions
- Collaborate with external accountants on tax filings, audits, and financial compliance
- Ensure compliance with law firm accounting standards and trust account regulations
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
- Maintain and strengthen financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Prior law firm accounting or financial management experience required
- Experience working within a contingency-based practice strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of legal accounting practices, including trust/IOLTA accounts
- Quick Books Online experience is required
- Ability to prepare and explain financial data to partners and senior leadership
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage complex financial workflows
- High level of discretion handling confidential financial information
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
