Position: Senior Manager, Business Incentives Group

A Tax Senior Manager, Business Incentives Group (BIG) in BDO’s Specialized Tax Services (STS) business is charged with helping clients identify, document, and support tax positions related to their BIG tax credits and deductions. The BIG Senior Manager is a critical member of the STS BIG leadership team and actively participates in the marketing and business development of the BIG practice.

In addition, the STS BIG Senior Manager develops and drives process improvement and team-building initiatives, maintains client relationships, and acts as a source of guidance to team members.

Job Summary

Lead and manage BIG tax consulting projects, provide technical expertise, represent clients before tax authorities, and develop new business opportunities while ensuring compliance and quality control across the firm.

Job Duties
  • Tax Specialization
    • Maintain and develop an in-depth understanding of BIG tax benefits and related technical issues.
    • Identify client opportunities in BIG and other tax specializations.
    • Provide consulting to maximize tax benefits and stay informed of new developments.
    • Identify process improvements for documenting and supporting BIG positions.
    • Identify non‑BIG tax and business opportunities for clients and prospects.
  • Tax Controversy
    • Effectively represent clients before tax authorities.
    • Respond to federal and state inquiries regarding BIG tax issues.
  • ASC 740‑10
    • Apply industry and firm standards (FAS 109, FIN
      48).
    • Measure and document the financial benefit of BIG positions.
    • Conduct research and compose memos in support of projects or transactions.
    • Develop presentations for marketing and sales opportunities.
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities.
    • Identify options to minimize tax and reporting burdens.
    • Recognize and communicate risk gray zones to partners.
    • Conduct detailed reviews of work papers and tax returns.
    • Maintain firm risk‑management and tax quality control standards.
    • Communicate with clients and other firm personnel as needed.
  • Strategy Development
    • Develop new or improved strategies to advance client and firm positions.
    • Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise and review day‑to‑day work of STS BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
  • Ensure all team members are trained in required areas.
  • Assess performance and develop goals to enhance professional growth.
  • Deliver periodic performance feedback and complete constructive evaluations.
  • Act as career advisor to team members.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree, required.
  • Degree in accounting, tax, or finance, preferred.
Experience
  • Seven (7) or more years of prior experience, required.
  • Six (6) or more years’ experience in BIG tax consulting, required.
  • Prior experience supervising tax consulting professionals, required.
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred.
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships, preferred.
License/Certification
  • CPA, preferred.
Software
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
  • Experience with tax‑related software and research databases (Caseware, GoSystems, etc.).
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge in the BIG tax area commensurate with required experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior analytical and research skills.
  • Solid organizational skills with detail orientation.
  • Ability to multi‑task independently and in a group setting.
  • Proven ability to manage deadlines and multiple projects.
  • Effective team management and delegation.
  • Strong relationship building with firm and client personnel.

  • Executive presence and primary contact on engagements.

Individual salaries are determined after considering qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

National Range: $99,750 - $262,500

Maryland Range: $99,750 - $262,500

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $99,750 - $262,500

Washington DC Range: $99,750 - $262,500
