Staff Software Engineer - Install Shield

This role leads the design, development, and optimization of software installation frameworks, focusing on Install Shield and core components written in C, C++, and C#.

• Design, develop, and maintain Install Shield projects and custom actions for Dentrix
• Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, Dev Ops and support to integrate feedback iteratively
• Lead initiatives to modernize and standardize installer infrastructure, including versioning, rollback, silent install contracts, and upgrade strategies
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex installation-related issues across supported Windows environments
• Contribute to the development of core application components in C, C#, and C++, ensuring maintainability and performance
• Mentor other engineers and set best practices in packaging, deployment, automated install testing, and legacy code modernization
• Support database schema management and maintain strong understanding of databases
• Use AI‑assisted development tools responsibly and champion AI assisted engineering practices

• AI/ML technologies:
  • LLMs, RAG pipelines, and prompt engineering

  • Model evaluation, monitoring, and responsible AI practices
  • AI‑assisted developer tooling to enhance productivity

• 7+ years of professional software development experience focused on Windows desktop and system-level applications
• 3+ years of hands‑on experience with package management tools, preferably Install Shield
• In‑depth knowledge of Windows OS, Windows Installer (MSI), and registry/file‑system operations
• Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills related to installation and runtime behaviors
• Clear, confident communicator thriving in a collaborative, knowledge‑sharing culture
• Experience leading cross‑functional efforts in an agile scrum environment with engineering, QA, Dev Ops, and support
• Ability to own technical design decisions and define cross‑team interdependent roadmaps
• Passion for building great software and driving team success

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field
• Prior experience as a team or technical lead
• Experience with WiX, Chocolatey, Scoop, Winget, or other modern packaging frameworks
• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and build automation tools
• Familiarity with digital signing processes, elevation/privilege handling, and silent installs
• Familiarity with Faircom database
• Familiarity with clean architecture and similar patterns

$150,000 - $165,000 is the expected starting salary range for a new-to-the-role employee. The position may receive a bonus target not reflected in the range.
