The Federal Student Worker provides front-line clerical and student-service support to the Office of Veterans Affairs. This position assists veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and eligible dependents as they access their education benefits and navigate enrollment at Southwest Tennessee Community College. The student worker handles confidential records, supports certification processing, and helps create a welcoming, respectful environment for the College's military-connected community.
Job Duties- Greet and assist veterans, service members, and dependents in person, by phone, and by email; respond to routine inquiries and refer complex questions to professional staff.
- Assist students with completing applications and forms for VA education benefits (e.g., Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill, DEA, VR&E) and the College's admissions and enrollment processes.
- Collect, organize, scan, and file certification documents, transcripts, DD-214 forms, certificates of eligibility, and related records while maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Help maintain accurate student files and databases; enter and update data in student information systems under staff supervision.
- Support the preparation of enrollment certification materials for submission to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Assist with office outreach activities, including veterans resource fairs, orientations, Veterans Day events, and student-veteran organization support.
- Distribute informational materials on VA benefits, campus resources, and community veteran services.
- Perform general office duties: answering phones, scheduling appointments, copying, mail handling, and maintaining a tidy front-desk area.
- Uphold FERPA and institutional confidentiality standards in the handling of all student and veteran records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Current enrollment at Southwest Tennessee Community College in at least six (6) credit hours with satisfactory academic progress.
- Only students who are approved for Federal Work Study are qualified for this position.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a professional, courteous demeanor.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and willingness to learn student information systems.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Veteran, active-duty service member, reservist, or military family member, or demonstrated familiarity with VA education benefits.
- Prior customer service, office, or administrative experience.
- Knowledge of campus and community resources available to military-connected students.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and sensitivity to the needs of veterans and military-connected students.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to punctuality, reliability, and professional conduct.
- Standard office environment.
- Work is primarily sedentary and involves extended use of a computer, occasional lifting of office materials up to 15 pounds, and regular interaction with students, staff, and the public.
