Job Overview

HFC is seeking to fill the position of Fire and Building Code Inspector 2 (or, if not certified, Fire and Building Code Inspector
1). Candidates hired as Inspector 1 will undergo 12 months of training and, upon certification and satisfactory performance, will be reclassified as Inspector 2, which includes a pay increase. This role involves inspecting equipment, structures, and materials in healthcare facilities, ensuring compliance with state and federal codes, and maintaining certifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect equipment, structures, or materials.
  • Train to inspect and witness the installation and testing of fire protection or detection systems, construction components, and other equipment to verify compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Study, prepare, and obtain federal certification through the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) within one year of hire.
  • Maintain and operate an assigned work vehicle for job duties.
  • Under close supervision, learn the inspection process for complaint/unusual incident investigations, annual surveys of licensed facilities, and construction inspections.
  • Learn how to access and utilize required department programs such as Edison, ACTS, and ACO.
  • Conduct follow‑up inspections.
  • Maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Obtain and maintain a fire inspector certification within one year of hire.
  • Attend and complete on‑ and off‑site training courses and any other certifications required by the department.
  • Perform general physical activities including walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, and stooping.
  • Identify features of building construction on architectural/engineering plans.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Interpret codes, regulations, and laws for internal and external clients.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree. A specific associate’s degree in fire‑protection engineering technology, fire science, engineering technology, or construction technology may substitute for the bachelor’s degree. Qualified full‑time experience in one or more of the following areas may substitute for education on a year‑for‑year basis to a maximum of four years: (1) fire prevention or suppression;

(2) engineering or architecture; (3) reviewing architectural or engineering plans to determine compliance with fire and building safety codes; (4) construction project management; (5) arson investigation of commercial or residential building structures; (6) fire or building inspections or design for buildings under construction; (7) skilled work in drafting, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, inspection, or other related building maintenance or construction trades.
