CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT, DATA CENTER
As a member of the xAI Construction team, you will be responsible for overseeing the coordination and field execution of data center construction at xAI's Memphis Supercluster. You will work with design engineers, construction project managers, commissioning agents, facilities and operations technicians, general contractors, vendors, and internal partners to deliver mission critical compute infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to drive positive change and own projects from start to finish, with the goal of building world-class data center facilities that power xAI's most advanced models.
This position is based in Memphis, TN.
- Coordinate data center construction to ensure general contractors, vendors, and trade partners meet xAI standards while delivering promised services, materials, and craftsmanship
- Plan and direct construction activities of internal resources as well as all involved contractors for each phase of construction—including site/civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, fire protection, and low-voltage—and lead coordination meetings between trades
- Work hand-in-hand with the xAI Construction team to maintain accurate records of daily logs, progress reports, look-ahead schedules, and cost/quantity reports related to data center construction
- Enforce contract expectations from general contractors and subcontractors and communicate any discrepancies
- Approve work being performed by contractors and handle any related issues, including quality, safety, and schedule recovery
- Authorize payments to contractors upon thorough inspection of work and verification of installed quantities
- Maintain a safe work site by implementing safety requirements, enforcing safe work habits, and observing OSHA, NFPA, and any applicable agency regulations, including lockout/tagout, arc-flash, and energized-work controls as the campus comes online
- Verify all checklists are complete and inspections are scheduled and passed, including authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), utility, and commissioning hold points
- Monitor cleanliness and hold contractors responsible for daily clean-up, material staging, and site logistics on an active, high-density construction campus
- Support commissioning and turnover, including Level 1-5 testing, integrated systems testing (IST), punch-list closeout, as-builts, and warranty work
- Develop and maintain rapport with contractors, operators, inspectors, and local officials
- Coordinate inspections with the City of Memphis, Shelby County, utility providers, and other authorities having jurisdiction
- Review and manage field RFIs, submittals, and project request tickets, including creating work orders when needed and managing their completion
- Create purchase orders as necessary to support timely project execution, including but not limited to rentals, materials, or subcontractor labor
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate
- 5+ years of experience in the construction industry
- 2+ years of experience leading the coordination of multiple trades on-site
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience superintending data center, mission-critical, semiconductor, industrial, or large scale MEP construction
- Knowledge of medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution, generators, UPS, switch gear, busway, grounding, and related data center electrical systems
- Knowledge of mechanical cooling systems, including chilled water, CRAH/CRAC, cooling towers, piping, and liquid cooling infrastructure
- Knowledge of concrete, structural steel, fire protection, plumbing, and low-voltage/fiber trades
- Knowledge of basic engineering and construction principles and methods
- Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, IBC, and local Memphis / Shelby County permitting and inspection processes
- OSHA 30 certification; familiarity with NFPA 70E
- Ability to conduct all business in a professional and ethical manner to serve internal customers and trade partners
- Skilled in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, one-lines, P&IDs, and calculations; ability to mark up and highlight coordination items
