Director of Operative Dentistry Division

Job Description

The University of Tennessee Health Sciences seeks a full-time non-tenure track faculty at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor and Director of Operative Dentistry Division within the Department of General Dentistry. The Division is responsible for preclinical and clinical education in operative dentistry, dental anatomy, CAD/CAM dentistry, dental materials, and restorative procedures for D1-D4 dental students. The Division supports D1 and D2 preclinical courses, D3 and D4 clinical operative dentistry procedures, and clinical competencies in operative dentistry.

The Division also works closely with the Department of General Dentistry group leaders, who serve as the primary clinical mentors for D3 and D4 students. Academic rank is based upon academic credentials.

Responsibilities

STRATEGIC AND EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP:

  • Provide leadership for the Operative Dentistry Division.
  • Develop and implement the Division's strategic plan.
  • Support innovation, collaboration, and excellence in dental education and patient care.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and integration of modern dental technologies.
  • Coordinate with the Department of General Dentistry leadership and group leaders.

EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP:

  • Oversee curriculum related to operative dentistry, dental anatomy, dental materials, CAD/CAM dentistry, and restorative dentistry.
  • Support preclinical education for D1 and D2 students.
  • Support clinical education, procedures, and competencies for D3 and D4 students.
  • Ensure courses are organized, contemporary, evidence-based, and competency-driven.
  • Integrate digital tools such as intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM, AT diagnostics and emerging technologies into education and patient care.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH:

  • Mentor full-time and part-time faculty.
  • Lead faculty development and calibration initiatives.
  • Promote digital competency among faculty.
  • Increase research productivity within the Division.
  • Support collaborative research, publications, student research, and external funding efforts.
  • Guide the implementation of digital dentistry workflows.
  • Support appropriate use and maintenance of CAD/CAM and related technologies.
  • Oversee high-quality, patient-centered clinical care in operative dentistry.
  • Collaborate with group leaders to support D3 and D4 clinical progression.
  • Encourage innovation in clinical teaching and restorative dental care.

TECHNOLOGY AND CLINICAL INNOVATION:

  • Guide the implementation of digital dentistry workflows.
  • Support appropriate use and maintenance of CAD/CAM and related technologies.
  • Oversee high-quality, patient-centered clinical care in operative dentistry.
  • Collaborate with group leaders to support D3 and D4 clinical progression.
  • Encourage innovation in clinical teaching and restorative dental care.
Qualifications

EDUCATION:

DDS/DMD or equivalent dental degree.

LICENSES:
Licensed or license-eligible for a Tennessee Dental License.

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES:

  • Advanced certificate in Operative Dentistry, Dental Materials, General Dentistry, or a related discipline.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Evidence of leadership in dental research.
  • Experience teaching predoctoral dental students.
  • Leadership experience of approximately 3 to 5 years.
  • Experience with operative dentistry, restorative dentistry, dental materials, CAD/CAM dentistry, or digital dentistry.
  • Strong communication, organizational, administrative, and mentoring skills.
