Sixth Grade Teacher

Rossman School is searching for an experienced educator to assume homeroom responsibilities for its sixth grade for the 2026–2027 academic year. A small-by-design school with one class per grade level, Rossman’s strong academic program challenges and stretches each student through team-teaching with two experienced educators at all grade levels. Working collaboratively, the sixth grade homeroom teaching team jointly plans and teaches the language arts and mathematics curriculum.

This homeroom teacher must have strong expertise in teaching mathematics. The Rossman School mathematics curriculum is largely delivered through use of Everyday Mathematics , though there is supplementation with other resources to meet the rigor of Rossman learning objectives. The math teacher will also support the language arts curriculum, including the study of multiple novels, an independent reading program, reading comprehension activities, and spelling and vocabulary.

The homeroom team is also responsible for fostering character development through the Rossman Values:
Honesty, Kindness, Respect, and Responsibility. The sixth grade advisory program is a dedicated time for students to develop character, academic, and interpersonal skills. Homeroom teachers partner with additional faculty to lead small groups of students.

With the school’s administration, the sixth grade homeroom team is involved in the secondary school application process. The sixth grade teachers collaboratively complete a recommendation for each student for secondary school admission and meet with admission directors to elaborate on the gifts of each child. At the end of the school year, the sixth grade homeroom team plans and leads the sixth grade graduation.

Sixth Grade Camp in the fall and Space Camp in the spring are both hallmark experiences of the sixth grade year. Sixth grade homeroom teachers lead these trips in collaboration with colleagues. Sixth Grade Camp emphasizes team building, while the Space Camp trip to Huntsville, AL, with a stop at the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN, is an interdisciplinary trip that illuminates our study of science and social studies.

The ideal candidate for this position will have at least three years experience teaching elementary/middle school students and have demonstrated a dedication to honesty, kindness, respect, and responsibility in his/her interactions with children and adults. He/she will possess a strong work ethic, a love for teaching, a commitment to each child’s academic and social-emotional growth, the ability to effectively partner with parents, a desire to collaborate with colleagues––both his/her teaching partner and specialty subject teachers—and a commitment to ongoing professional growth.

Experience in an independent school is not required. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with other area independent schools and an applicant's experience.
