Position: Assistant/Associate/Professor in Student Services - 823320

Job Summary

The Quillen College of Medicine seeks to add a position for a full-time, 12-month faculty member at the Assistant/Associate or Professor level in Student Services to serve as Academic Support Counselor. This is a Non-Tenurable, Non-Convertible, Clinical Track position.

The individual will join our organization at a transformative time as we develop a new approach to student support services into a cohesive unit (CARES) that provides comprehensive care to all Quillen students. In the Academic Support Counselor role, this faculty member will provide academic assessment and counseling services related to the development of effective learning skills, study strategies, learning preferences, time management, and career guidance on an individual and group basis.

The position will report directly to the Director of Counseling and Academic Resource Essential Services (CARES) and will work closely with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to provide instruction to faculty and students related to test-taking skills and test preparation, with emphasis on maximizing the overall experience and the achievement of expected learning outcomes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Evidence of awareness of educational demands at the professional level and/or experience providing academic and/or counseling support to professional-level students.
  • Knowledge and experience with factors interfering with standard academic performance, e.g., social, emotional, cultural, and cognitive deficiencies, allowing for differential diagnosis of various learning difficulties.
  • Ability to identify students who need referral to a counselor, psychiatrist or other health care professional.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize students with learning differences and/ or possible learning disabilities, to be able to make appropriate referrals to a psychiatrist or other health care professional.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide counseling regarding learning and study strategies, time management, test-taking strategies, and compensatory strategies for at-risk students and students with learning disabilities.
  • Awareness that learning strategies may have changed with different course offerings and curriculum responsibilities.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to critical and subtle issues that can potentially impact academic performance by students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to student needs with appropriate program design and implementation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with individuals at various academic levels, such that she/he can work effectively with students, tutors, professional staff, faculty, course directors, administrative personnel, and vendors.
  • Ability to establish and meet short-term, mid-range, and long-range goals and objectives with minimal direction.
  • Ability to monitor and track the success of the program.
  • Excellent oral communication, public speaking, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work irregular schedules, which may include some evenings and weekend days.
  • Willingness to attend meetings and workshops to ensure awareness of current trends in support of educational excellence.
  • The candidate should be detail-oriented and possess excellent time management skills.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or higher with a focus or strong background in education
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.), ABDs will be given consideration
  • Experience working with medical students, or other professional students.
  • Experience in learning and remediation strategies.
  • Experience in counseling, academic advising, and academic support programs
  • Experience with standardized tests (e.g., GRE, MCAT, NBME Subject examinations, USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 examinations)
