Job Title: Director, Marching Band and Assistant Professor, Music

Reports To: Chair, Division of Fine Arts and Humanities

Department: Division of Fine Arts & Humanities

The Band Director/Assistant Professor of Music will oversee rehearsals and performances for the marching and pep bands. The individual will establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band. They also handle behind-the-scenes duties such as recruiting and budget planning.

Additionally, the individual will teach six hours of coursework, participate in general activities of the college including academic advising, other college related activities, and special projects related to the divisional and college goals. The general duties of the position will cover teaching, professional development, and community service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop marching band
  • Maintain musical instruments related to the band
  • Lead band rehearsals at least four times a week
  • Direct at least 2-4 band performances each semester. These performances may include Chapel Services on campus each month and such annual services as Convocation, the Academic Honors Ceremony, the Lantern Service Commencement, as well as Christmas and Spring concerts each year
  • Teach music applied courses
  • Provide academic advising to students when applicable
  • Participate in the general academic/professional activities of the college
  • Serve actively on a Faculty Standing committee
  • Participate in all divisional, major area, and faculty meetings
  • Provide academically/professionally related community service
  • Help to place students in appropriate internships and other community-based learning experiences when applicable
  • Assist in monitoring student performance in their academic and professional progress
  • Design and distribute promotional material (e.g., posters and programs) for major events
  • Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in music (brass and/or percussion)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Excellent communication skills (e.g., radio interviews and local news appearances)
  • Excellent knowledge of subject that the incumbent will teach
  • Ability to work effectively with colleague faculty members
  • Ability to work effectively with different constituencies
  • Understanding of the goals and practices of active, experiential community-based education
  • Ability to use electronic resources in developing course materials, reports, and tracking students
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment, which requires business professional attire. While performing the above job duties, the employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee, frequently, is required to walk, stand, reach and lift (25) pounds. The employee is required to travel within the area, as well as overnight travel on occasion, which may require air travel.
