Job Description

Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science and teaching certification required; a Master’s degree is preferred. City University School complies with all Tennessee policies regarding minimum certification requirements, and requires that the teacher be certified in the instructional subject area or demonstrate progress toward obtaining proper certification.

Only certified applicants will be considered. If you do not hold an education (teacher) certification you will not be considered.

Experience working with at‑risk student populations and a record of increased attendance, performance, retention and graduation. Proficient in pedagogy and teaching strategies that encourage and produce student success. Able to participate in a campus environment where work is monitored regularly. Skilled at incorporating multiple teaching methods and technology into the learning environment. Demonstrates an appreciation for assessment, improvement, and an academically rigorous setting.

Experience working with adolescents both inside and outside the classroom.

Reports to: Campus President/Chancellor

Supervises: Scholars

Job Goal: To instruct scholars by delivering a set curriculum and teaching effectively using a group‑focused instructional system while keeping scholar learning as the ultimate objective.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and organize lessons, including homework, tests, enrichment, and remedial material.
  • Motivate scholars, focus instruction, use a point system, and make clear presentations.
  • Check learning outcomes, use group leaders, review or re‑teach as needed.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback.
  • Give presentations, explanations, and directions in a manner understood by scholars.
  • Maintain scholar attention in class by engaging scholars with questions.
  • Encourage participation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter through instruction and use of materials.
Classroom Management
  • Maintain a positive classroom environment.
  • Manage time well.
  • Uphold the Student Scholars Code of Conduct.
  • Prevent behavior problems by intervening early.
  • Maintain control of scholar behavior.
  • Reinforce and reward appropriate social and academic behavior.
  • Participate in general supervision through the school.
  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude toward scholars.
  • Have reasonable expectations of scholars.
Assessment

Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching based on scholar achievement, including tests and standardized tests.

Rapport with Students

Work with scholars enthusiastically, interact with them effectively, and contribute to their academic and personal success.

Full‑time teachers are scheduled to work 40 hours per week and are expected to have thirty (30) contact hours or periods per week.

Benefits

Competitive salary: $55,000 to $68,000 per year.

Health and dental insurance (a significant portion of the costs is covered by the employer); group term life and long‑term disability insurance for employees.
