Classroom Teacher Job Description

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Administers and develops subject specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations, student achievements, develop methods for improvement, and/or reinforce classroom goals in the home environment
  • Assess student progress toward standards, expectations, and/or goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and a variety of community resources to improve overall quality of student outcomes and achieve established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan
  • Counsel students to improve performance, health status, problem solving techniques, and a variety of personal issues
  • Demonstrate and differentiate methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements
  • Instruct students to improve their success in academics through a defined course of study
  • Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips) to provide a safe and positive learning environment
  • Participate in a variety of meetings and professional development activities to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions
  • Prepare written materials (e.g., grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance records, anecdotal records) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses) to maintain personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment, and adhere to state law and board policies
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or direct to appropriate personnel for resolution
  • Direct teacher assistants, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program and address the needs of individual students
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Support other classroom teachers to assist them in implementing established curriculum and/or individual student plans
  • Demonstrate and model integration of technology in all curriculum areas on a regular basis
  • Follow a plan for professional technology development and actively seek opportunities to grow professionally
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree and endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate
  • Must be highly qualified
  • Governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the Tennessee Board of Education
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position
