Job Summary

This is a part‑time adjunct faculty position in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The appointment is term‑by‑term and may include fall, spring, and summer. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and postings close annually on January 31; applicants must re‑apply each year to remain in the system. Applicants should prepare to upload a cover letter, resume/CV, references list, statement of teaching philosophy, and an unofficial transcript.

The Adjunct Instructor is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. Duties are performed during the day, evening, or weekend on any Southwest Tennessee Community College campus.

Job Duties
  • Prepares and delivers instruction in Sociology.
  • Compiles, administers, evaluates, and grades students’ course work and communicates progress through timely grading.
  • Develops curricula and instructional materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Maintains office hours for student advice and assists with recruitment, retention, and course‑related issues.
  • Maintains accurate attendance, grades, and required records in compliance with FERPA.
  • Attends faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development, orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean, or Department Chair.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field through current literature, collegial interaction, and professional conferences.
  • Participates in departmental and college committees and provides outreach service to the community.
  • Might perform other duties assigned by the Department Head or Dean.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in the teaching discipline or a master’s degree in another discipline with 18 hours of graduate work in the teaching discipline.
  • Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience in higher education or one (1) year of teaching experience plus three (3) years of employment in the field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies for student‑centered learning.
  • Skill in selecting and using appropriate instructional methods and procedures.
  • Ability to integrate technology into course delivery.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing clearly.
  • Willingness and flexibility to teach classes using various instructional delivery methods at any of the four locations.
