Classroom Teacher Job Description

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

The classroom teacher:

  • Administers and develops subject specific assessments to assess student competency levels and/or develop individual learning plans.
  • Advices parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement, and/or reinforce classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assesses student progress toward standards, expectations, and/or goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and a variety of community resources to improve the overall quality of student outcomes, and achieve established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Counsels students to improve performance, health status, problem‑solving techniques, and various personal issues.
  • Demonstrates and differentiates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject‑specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Instructs students to improve their success in academics through a defined course of study.
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings and professional development activities to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
  • Reports incidents (fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses, etc.) to maintain personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment, and adhere to state law and board policies.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Directs teacher assistants, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program and address the needs of individual students.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Supports other classroom teachers to assist them in implementing established curriculum and/or individual student plans.
  • Demonstrates and models on a regular basis the integration of technology in all curriculum areas.
  • Follows a plan for professional technology development and actively seeks opportunities to grow professionally.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree and endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate.
  • Must be highly qualified.
  • Governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the Tennessee Board of Education.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position.
Performance Aptitudes

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification and referencing such analysis to established standards for recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
