Brief Description

A School Guidance Counselor plays an important role in promoting a positive and safe environment in an educational institution. This position requires an individual with strong interpersonal skills and extensive knowledge of counseling and guidance theory and best practices. To ensure student academic, social and emotional success, the School Guidance Counselor will provide a range of services including individual and group counseling, career and college readiness programs, conflict resolution, respite classes, crisis intervention, and mentor programs.

With a combination of understanding, empathy, and knowledge of the subject matter, the School Guidance Counselor can help shape a school's atmosphere and have a direct and profound impact on student development. This job description outlines the expectations, qualifications, and responsibilities a successful Counselor should possess.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provide individual and group counseling services to students.
  • Assist students in developing academic and career plans.
  • Address behavioral issues and provide crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to support student success.
  • Coordinate and implement prevention programs related to bullying, substance abuse, and mental health.
  • Conduct assessments and interpret data to develop personalized guidance plans.
  • Offer resources and referrals to external support services.
  • Organize and facilitate college and career readiness workshops.
  • Support students in developing social skills and managing peer relationships.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of student interactions.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Advocate for student needs within the school community.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or similar certification.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Strong knowledge of educational and career planning resources.
  • Proficiency in crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff, students, and parents.
  • Experience using counseling software and assessment tools.
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, or a related field.
  • State certification as a School Guidance Counselor.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a school or educational setting.
  • Understanding of child and adolescent development theories.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Commitment to ethical and professional standards in counseling.
