Job Description
The Learning Specialist provides academic support to students across various colleges and departments at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This includes coordinating and delivering personalized academic counseling, coaching on learning strategies, and conducting workshops on time management, test-taking, study skills, stress management, and board preparation. This position helps students navigate the rigorous demands of the health science curriculum, offering guidance on issues such as organization, test anxiety, and exam preparation.
This position also involves evaluating and improving support services based on student feedback.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, Higher Education/Student Affairs, Psychology, Social Work, Social Sciences, or a related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience providing coaching, mentoring, advising, instruction, training, or support services that promote student learning, development, and growth. Experience developing resources and facilitating workshops or presentations for individuals or groups.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, health care professionals, and members of the public.
- Highly proficient in managing multiple tasks, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to plan and prioritize effectively.
- Skill in coaching, with creativity in designing academic resources tailored to meet student needs.
- Awareness of factors that impact student learning and adjustment, including individual backgrounds, experiences, and challenges faced by non-traditional students, veterans, and students with disabilities.
- Familiarity with learning theories and the ability to implement individualized coaching to support student success and development.
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and make independent decisions with minimal supervision.
- Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with students, Academic Success staff, and campus partners.
- Ability to build strong relationships with faculty and staff to enhance student success and foster collaboration across departments.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.
