Senior Electromechanical Design Engineer (Power Utilities)

Our client is a leading, employee‑owned manufacturer serving the electrical power utilities industry. Their products keep the electrical grid running reliably, and they are seeking a Senior Electromechanical Design Engineer to lead engineering efforts for the “brains” of intelligent smart grid products. This is a hands‑on engineering and leadership role, managing a small team while driving innovation in microprocessor‑based controls and power distribution automation solutions.

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
- 7–10 years of hands‑on experience designing, developing, and testing electromechanical or electronic products (., inverters, drives, servers, network switches)
- Experience designing microprocessor‑based controller products for power distribution automation or closely related systems
- Circuit board layout experience (analog and mixed‑signal PCBs)
- Strong background in new product builds, modifications, and manufacturing support
- Practical experience designing assemblies using sheet metal, PCBA mounting, cable harnesses, electrical contacts, terminals, springs, and fasteners
- Proficiency in Solid Works 3D CAD (sheet metal, plastics, cabling)
- Tolerance stack‑up analysis experience
- Knowledge of regulatory standards (IEC, UL, CSA, NEMA, NEC)
The Senior Electromechanical Design Engineer will lead the design, development, testing, and lifecycle support of advanced intelligent power grid products. This position is responsible for designing the core controls used in smart grid devices—ranging from capacitor controls and switch gear controls to patented peer‑to‑peer feeder restoration systems. The role combines technical depth with small‑team leadership, ensuring the successful launch of next‑generation power distribution technologies.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop conceptual and detailed electromechanical product models
- Lead verification and validation testing, including test planning, execution, documentation, and acceptance criteria
- Engineer controller products that incorporate microprocessor‑based controls for automation applications such as capacitor controls, source transfer controls, electronic fuses, and smart switch gear systems
- Design electronic products for smart grid solutions, including analog circuits and specialized power supply designs
- Contribute to product packaging, documentation, safety labels, and compliance markings
- Perform First Article Inspections, part approvals, and ensure fit, form, and function meet requirements
- Support manufacturing with new builds, modifications, and continuous improvement
- Experience with simulation tools for finite element and thermal analysis
- Understanding of EMI/EMC principles and thermal impacts
- Experience designing electronic equipment packaging
