Overview
Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Smart Grid Components) — Memphis, TN. Our client is a highly successful, employee-owned manufacturer serving the electrical power utilities industry. They design and build mechanical and electromechanical products that keep the power grid running reliably. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on engineering the “brains” behind next-generation smart grid products while managing a small team.
Must-Have Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
- 7–10 years of hands-on experience designing, developing, and testing electromechanical products (e.g., inverters, drives, servers, network switches)
- Strong experience with microprocessor-based controller design for power distribution automation
- Experience with analog and mixed-signal circuit board layout
- Proficiency in Solid Works 3D CAD (sheet metal, plastics, cable design)
- Working knowledge of IEC, UL, CSA, NEMA, and National Electric Code standards
- Experience supporting new product builds and transitioning designs to manufacturing
The Senior Electrical Design Engineer will lead the design, development, testing, and support of innovative intelligent power grid products. This role combines deep technical ownership with team leadership responsibility.
Key Responsibilities- Lead conceptual and detailed product design and development
- Design controller products with microprocessor-based controls used in power distribution automation, including:
- Capacitor controls
- Source transfer controls
- Electronic fuses
- Switchgear controls
- Peer-to-peer feeder restoration systems
- Develop analog circuitry and unique power supply designs for smart grid solutions
- Create and execute verification and validation test plans with defined acceptance criteria
- Support product packaging, user documentation, safety labels, and product markings
- Perform First Article Inspection and approve parts based on form, fit, and function
- Collaborate with manufacturing to support new product builds and modifications
- Manage and mentor a small engineering team
