Job Overview
The Maintenance Engineer III provides advanced technical leadership and hands‑on support for maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement of manufacturing and facility equipment supporting Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics. This role focuses on complex equipment troubleshooting, preventive and predictive maintenance strategy, equipment upgrades, and cross‑functional problem solving in a regulated medical‑device manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities- This position is not offering any type of visa transfer or sponsorship now or in the future.
- Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support for complex manufacturing, utility, and facility equipment.
- Support the installation, commissioning, and qualification of new or upgraded equipment.
- Develop, optimize, and sustain preventive and predictive maintenance strategies to improve equipment reliability and uptime.
- Analyze equipment performance data and downtime trends to identify root causes and long‑term corrective actions.
- Lead or support root‑cause investigations for recurring equipment failures and production interruptions.
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Create, revise, and approve maintenance procedures, SOPs, work instructions, and PM documentation.
- Support change management activities, including Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and equipment modifications.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Validation, and Operations teams.
- Support validation activities (IQ/OQ/PQ) when equipment impacts validated processes.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to maintenance technicians and junior engineers.
- Support spare parts strategy, vendor management, and external service providers.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, and cost reduction.
- Maintain an on‑site presence to support manufacturing floor activities.
- Lead the effort into digitizing maintenance and develop a predictive maintenance strategy based on the CMMS data analysis.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
- 5 years of demonstrated experience supporting manufacturing or facility equipment maintenance in an industrial environment.
- Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation (SOPs, work instructions, maintenance procedures).
- Strong understanding of equipment safety, LOTO, and risk mitigation practices.
- Strong ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control systems.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in cross‑functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in a regulated medical device or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
- Experience supporting validated equipment or regulated manufacturing processes.
- Experience leading equipment improvement projects or reliability initiatives.
- Prior experience mentoring or providing technical leadership.
- Familiarity with CMMS systems for maintenance planning and reporting.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, TPM, or reliability engineering principles.
Physical Requirements
This role requires a strong on‑site presence in a manufacturing environment. The individual must be able to spend significant time on the manufacturing floor and support off‑shift or weekend activities as required to address critical equipment events.
