Design Engineer
Join the High Power Engineering team supporting SpaceXAI to design, build, operate, and maintain electrical infrastructure for AI training campuses. As a Design Engineer on the Data Center team, you will work with a small on-site team to scale high-capacity power systems on a schedule set by compute demand. The position is based in Memphis, TN, with potential travel to other sites.
Responsibilities include:
- Producing and maintaining single-line diagrams, three-lines, panel schedules, cable schedules, conduit and raceway layouts, grounding plans, and equipment elevations.
- Performing load calculations, voltage drop, cable ampacity and derating, conduit fill, and pull-tension analysis including long underground runs.
- Sizing MV/LV transformers, switch gear, busway, and feeders; specifying impedance, BIL, temperature rise, and short-time ratings.
- Writing equipment specifications and technical bid evaluations for ring-main units, transformers, switch gear, busway, and PDUs.
- Supplying model inputs to protection and power-system studies: nameplate data, impedances, cable constants, and as-designed configurations.
- Resolving field RFIs and issuing design changes during construction.
- Maintaining organized design and asset documentation for Data Center electrical packages.
- Ensuring compliance with NFPA 70, 70B, 70E, NESC, and IEEE standards, prioritizing safety and engineering excellence.
Basic qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another engineering discipline.
- 3+ years of electrical design experience in data center, industrial, or utility facilities.
Preferred skills and experience include:
- Experience producing issued-for-construction drawing sets in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or Revit.
- Working knowledge of NEC Articles 110, 215, 240, 250, 310, and 450.
- Medium-voltage cable system design experience.
- Experience with power systems analysis software and tools: ETAP, SKM, Easy Power, Matlab, PSCAD, etc.
- Revit or BIM coordination experience.
- Engineer in Training certification, or on track for a Professional Engineer license.
- Experience on a repeated, multi-phase build rather than one-off projects.
- Demonstrated initiative, creative problem-solving, and strong analytical/engineering fundamentals.
Additional requirements include:
- Performing hands-on work in all environments (heat, cold, rain), in tight quarters or at heights.
- Working extended hours and weekends as needed to support construction, energization, and operations.
- Remaining focused in hazardous environments while wearing appropriate PPE.
- Lifting up to 25 lbs. unassisted.
- Providing 24/7 on-call support for emergencies.
- Willing to work on-site in Memphis, TN. This is not a remote or hybrid role.
- Travel up to 25% for factory witness testing, vendor and OEM engagement, and supporting other sites.
- Valid driver's license.
