The SBA Loan Underwriter is responsible for facilitating the accurate and timely analysis and underwriting of SBA 7(a) and 504 loan submissions to the point of bank credit decision. Responsible for evaluating loan submissions for completeness, analyzing and spreading borrower financials to determine cash flow, ratios, personal and business strengths, and identify issues for further investigation. Interview and interact with the principal(s) as needed to answer questions and address concerns.
Generate the narrative credit writeup for review of approval authorities, making changes as needed. Complete the commitment letter or declination letter and convey the decision to the Business Development Officer and/or borrower.
- Review of credit packages.
- Work with the closing department as needed for changes to the original approval and review/approval of third-party reports.
- Work with the BDO, closer, and borrower when needed on issues that come up.
- Opportunity to expand knowledge and expertise via continuing classes/webinars and exposure to a range of borrowers for a national PLP lender.
- Completion of transaction spreadsheets and financial analysis.
- Preparation of credit presentations, credit modifications, loan commitment letters, and other reports.
- Presents credit requests as needed to the EB&T credit committee.
- Review third-party reports (appraisal, environmental report, etc.) for completeness and accuracy.
- Approve invoices of third-party reports ordered.
- Special projects as required by management.
- Minimum of four years of experience in underwriting for SBA lending or commercial finance organization.
- Bachelors’ degree, preferably in business, economics, finance, or banking with a strong background in accounting and finance.
- Knowledge of GAAP accounting.
- Experience in tax a bonus.
- High attention to detail.
- Able to prioritize and reprioritize work tasks and deliver work product under tight deadlines
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfortable with conflicting views of others and able to adequately express their point of view.
- Willingness to take ownership of recommendations and balance loan production with the proper risk/reward relationship.
- Able to work well with peers, lenders and superiors.
