JOB SUMMARY/
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Under general supervision from the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief, the Lead Firearms and Tactical Training Instructor performs a variety of specialized, technical, and other duties in support of the Police Department Firearms qualifications. This position maintains the Police Department’s Armory, conducts weapons training duties. and performs related work as assigned. This position trains and provides oversight to other assigned instructors.
Conduct training on Active Threat/Shooter Training to all police personnel.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:
- Provides firearms training and qualifications for department members and others as may be assigned.
- Provides personal firearms instruction to include remedial instruction as needed.
- Develops lesson plans and training on Responding to an Active Shooter/Threat.
- Develops lesson plans and training sessions for firearms, less lethal weapons, handcuffing techniques, and chemical agent deployment.
- Operates, demonstrates, and provides instruction on a variety of weapons and equipment including shotguns, handguns, patrol rifles, and issued equipment worn on a duty belt, and body armor.
- Conducts inspections of department-issued weapons, including handguns, shotguns, patrol rifles, along with authorized personal back-up and off-duty weapons.
- Maintain an awareness of condition of weapons and other issued equipment and make recommendations for replacement when necessary.
- Orders range supplies within budget guidelines and maintain inventory control. This includes all weapons, ammunition, targets, and cleaning supplies, and body armor.
- Reviews department policies, procedures, laws, codes, and items relating to the use of force and recommends changes as needed.
- Remains current with new methods of range training and armory operation.
- Attends courses and training seminars relating to weapons maintenance and firearms.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of police experience with a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Police Firearms Instructor. Must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver's license. Must meet the minimum standards for pre-employment as stated by The Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission; must be a U.S. citizen; pass a physical and psychological exam;
consent to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprints; and qualify to carry a firearm; must be able to work rotating shifts.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Must satisfactorily complete at least one P.O.S.T. certified school. Possession of Firearms Instructors Certification. Must complete an approved in-service training session appropriate for employee’s rank and responsibilities each year at a time and location designated and must complete the training in a satisfactory manner as a condition of continued employment. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license or a valid license from a neighboring state, if resident of that state, and must maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of employment.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
:
Must pass a physical and psychological exam. Must agree to comply with police appearance and grooming standards, as set by department policy, and maintain such standards as a condition of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations applicable to firearms.
- Knowledge of police firearms, ammunition, and range safety standards.
- Knowledge of Range Target Systems.
- Knowledge of current principles, trends and methods of training and instruction as it relates to police firearms.
- Knowledge of basic storage procedures for weapons and ammunition.
- Knowledge of basic first-aid practices.
- Knowledge to prepare and deliver effective firearm training.
- Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions with limited supervision.
