ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSWork under the direction of an assigned supervisor to perform and respond to duties related to traffic control, non‑critical crash investigation, and motor vehicle code and status enforcement. This is a non‑commissioned entry‑level trainee position in which individuals will receive preparatory training and experience to become future police candidates.
Respond to crash scenes. Obtain information and complete necessary reports; issue traffic citations and summons for violations that occurred during the course of a crash investigation; provide or request other services as needed (i.e. a police unit, fire unit, ambulance, emergency rescue, towing service, etc.). Direct and control traffic hazards at crash scenes, congested areas, special events and areas where traffic hazards exist or traffic signals have malfunctioned.
Report criminal behaviors observed while patrolling; provide assistance to the public. Perform follow‑up investigations of crash cases. Assist police officers in traffic related matters and crash investigations. Issue citations for violations of parking ordinances. Report and process abandoned vehicles; provide assistance in location, identification and recovery of stolen vehicles. Provide miscellaneous administrative support. Testify in court as needed.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
Operates a motor vehicle and equipment associated with Police Service Technician responsibilities, including but not limited to the ability to operate general office equipment such as workstation computers, telephones, copiers, facsimile devices, etc.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONSWork involves exposure to inclement weather, dense or fast‑moving traffic; continued interaction with the general public involving traffic crashes and incidents. Police Service Technicians are not permitted to respond to crime scene calls or requests for assistance involving possible use of weapons or physical force. PSTs do not have arrest authority and are not armed.
QUALIFICATIONS- Must be eighteen (18) years of age and have completed a high school education or its equivalency.
- Must meet visual and medical standards.
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment.
- Must successfully complete a written battery of tests.
- Must attain 54 college credit hours within 3 years and successfully complete a one‑year probationary period.
- Preferences will be given to candidates that currently have college credit which may be applied to a criminal justice degree at a local community college.
- All candidates must successfully pass a criminal justice employment background check to work within the Police Services Division.
As a Police Service Technician, the employee must attain 54 college credit hours within 3 years and must successfully complete a one‑year probationary period. PSTs are subject to the terms of a written agreement and are expected to make consistent progress in job duties and in educational requirements as a condition of continued employment, and to transition to Police Recruit.
