Job Description

Network Tools Engineer L4 / Automation Engineer - Solar Winds

Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Solar Winds Engineer to manage, optimize and automate various functions of our Solar Winds platform. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the Solar Winds Orion suite, with experience in maintenance and troubleshooting of the platform as well as Power Shell Development. This role plays a critical part in ensuring observability, performance monitoring, and automation across our global infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer and maintain the Solar Winds Orion platform, including NPM, NCM, SAM, VNQM, and other modules.
  • Develop and maintain Power Shell scripts for automating Solar Winds tasks, including:
    Node onboarding/offboarding, alert suppression during maintenance windows, custom alert/report generation and distribution, and Solar Winds–Service Now integration enhancements.
  • Implement custom monitoring logic, automated diagnostics, and integrations via Orion API, SWIS, and REST endpoints.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand automation needs and deliver solutions that support observability workflows.
  • Build tools and utilities to support monitoring self-service, reporting automation, and configuration validation.
  • Manage custom pollers, SNMP configurations, and agentless/agent-based monitoring across multi-vendor environments.
  • Design and optimize SWQL and SQL queries to support reports and custom dashboards for tailored views. Configure and maintain alert logic, escalation policies, and notification integrations (e.g., with Service Now, email, Teams).
  • Participate in incident triage and root cause analysis, leveraging Solar Winds logs and metrics. Maintain security posture of the application, including RBAC, SNMPv3, and audit logging.
  • Contribute to and maintain Kanban board tasks and documentation related to Solar Winds projects and issues.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience managing Solar Winds environments (Orion Platform 2020.2.6 or newer).
  • 3+ years of Power Shell development experience focused on infrastructure and monitoring automation.
  • Strong experience with Orion SDK, SWQL Studio, and Solar Winds API integrations.
  • Strong understanding of Power Shell classes, modules, error handling, and parallelization techniques.
  • SQL Server knowledge, including query optimization, performance tuning, and CTEs.
  • Familiarity with network topology mapping, Net Path, and Net Flow analysis.
  • Experience in large-scale monitoring environments (>1000 nodes).
  • Solid understanding of Windows Server, IIS, and system-level diagnostics.
  • Comfortable working in Kanban/Agile environments with tools such as Jira or Azure Dev Ops.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with multiple teams and technical stakeholders.
Preferred
  • Exposure to event-driven automation, such as responding to alerts with corrective actions.
  • Past work automating Solar Winds alert tuning, configuration, or compliance reporting.
  • Exposure to Service Now integrations, REST APIs, and webhook configuration.
