Position: Sr Staff Image Data Scientist — Time-Series & Neuroscience

Overview

The Sr Staff Image Data Scientist is responsible for providing technical design, implementation, and operational health of critical analysis platforms in the assigned department. Serves as a technology advocate within the St. Jude image analysis community. The role involves architecting, designing, and developing image analysis platforms, independently leading engineering discussions, and assessing impacts on overall technology performance. The candidate will engage with internal and external experts, including leadership.

The core team focus is on turning image data into biological knowledge, using computational tools at the intersection of biology and cutting‑edge microscopy methods to understand brain development and disease.

Explore the nexus of image analysis and data science, dive into complex data, and tackle neurobiology’s toughest challenges through innovative computational research. This position emphasizes time‑series analysis to advance research in calcium imaging, neural and behavioral dynamics, and chromatin dynamics.

Responsibilities
  • Develop statistical, time‑series, and machine‑learning techniques to extract meaningful insights from complex biological data (large‑scale neuroimages, light and electron microscopy, animal behavior, histopathology, etc).
  • Collaborate with scientists and researchers to design experiments and optimize data‑acquisition protocols for effective downstream computational analysis.
  • Lead end‑to‑end image analysis from pre‑processing and data cleaning to reporting results.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with the latest advancements in data science.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or a related field.
  • Strong background in statistical analysis and machine‑learning algorithms.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, or similar scientific computing languages.
  • Experience with deep‑learning frameworks (e.g., Tensor Flow, PyTorch) and high‑performance computing environments a plus.
  • Strong expertise in time‑series analysis, image and signal processing, and data visualization.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex concepts and results to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Minimum Education and/or Training
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 8 years of experience required.
  • Master’s degree plus six (6) years of experience, or Ph.D. plus four (4) years of experience preferred.
Minimum Experience

Work experience in a relevant area (e.g., applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computer engineering, or related field) demonstrating technical thought leadership in an applied computational field (e.g., computer vision, deep learning, numerical optimization, image analysis, scientific computing, scientific visualization). Substantial experience in image analyses, image data management, and programming; experience in biological/medical imaging, deep learning, image analysis platforms, scientific computing, scientific data visualization, and HPC optimization preferred.

Proven performance in an earlier comparable role.

Compensation

Estimated salary range: $114,400 – $216,320 per year for the role of Sr Staff Image Data Scientist — Time‑Series & Neuroscience.
