The Data Specialist supports Goodwill’s mission by keeping data accurate, creating actionable reports, and helping leaders make informed decisions that support employment and community service programs.
Function
The Data Specialist is responsible for supporting Goodwill’s operational reporting and data systems through structured data collection, validation, organization and reporting. This role ensures that internal datasets are accurate, consistent and properly documented to support leadership decision‑making.
- Gather operational data from internal systems and reporting sources
- Review datasets for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
- Identify discrepancies and work with appropriate departments to resolve issues
- Data Organization & Maintenance
- Maintain structured Excel workbooks and standardized reporting templates
- Ensure proper file naming conventions and document control
- Archive and manage historical reporting data
- Assist in preparing recurring operational reports
- Support maintenance and updates of Power BI dashboards
- Provide ad hoc data support to leadership as requested
- Documentation & Process Support
- Document data sources, reporting methodologies, and workflow procedures
- Assist in developing standardized reporting processes
- Promote data integrity and best practices across departments
- Communicate professionally with retail, donation, and operations teams
- Support data clarification and validation efforts
- Contribute to a culture of accountability and data‑driven decision‑making.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- 1–2 years of experience working with spreadsheets or data in a professional setting
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel (sorting/filtering, formulas, basic pivot tables)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Exposure to Power BI or strong willingness to learn
- Strong attention to detail and organizational ability
- Ability to interpret numbers and identify inconsistencies
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to handle confidential information responsibly
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Analytics, IT, or related field
- Experience in retail, nonprofit, or operational reporting environments
- Experience with Power BI dashboard updates
- Basic understanding of data validation or quality control processes
- Experience using shared file systems or structured data repositories
- Able to bend, reach and stand for extensive periods of time and lift up to forty pounds. May be required to lift heavier goods/items with the assistance of a team member.
- Able to perform tasks that require repetitive motion, i.e., tagging or pricing products.
- Manual dexterity is required.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Ability to travel occasionally between store or operational locations, as needed
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive operational and financial information
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a structured office environment
