Legal Counsel
The Staff Attorney assists the Clerk & Master with the strategic and daily operations of the Chancery Court and Probate Division. The successful candidate will provide procedural and substantive legal guidance to ensure compliance with applicable laws; prepare policies, procedures, and training materials; support deputy clerks in the performance of their duties; research and write on a diverse array of legal issues;
and communicate with judges, attorneys, court clerks, other Knox County departments, and the public. This position is not a traditional chambers law clerk position.
- Research and write about a wide range of issues involving statutes, regulations, and rules governing the operations of civil trial courts and the filing and disposition of cases;
- Communicate with judges, attorneys, court clerks, other Knox County Court departments, and the public concerning court regulations, rules, policies, and procedures;
- Draft memoranda, policies, procedures, training materials, and other documents to promote the efficient and effective operations of the clerk’s office and compliance with applicable laws;
- Assist the Clerk & Master with drafting various reports, such as master’s reports, clerk’s reports, real property sales reports, collection of delinquent real property taxes, financial reports, and notices to state and local regulatory bodies;
- Assist with training of deputy clerks in operational and procedural matters.
- Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours;
- Perform other duties as required.
- Graduate of an accredited law school;
- Possess an active license to practice law in the State of Tennessee and be in good standing with the Supreme Court of Tennessee, or have the ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable time from acceptance of the position;
- Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience in a legal setting or other highly regulated field;
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
- Knowledge of Tennessee Rules of Civil Procedure and maxims of statutory interpretation.
- Ability to work in a position of high complexity with minimal supervision;
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products;
- Ability to focus and demonstrate attention to detail;
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of court clerk’s leadership team.
