Position: Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Tier III) - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Job Overview

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Tier III) works collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. They provide care for patients in the outpatient clinic and inpatient setting, addressing acute and chronic issues, managing disease and treatment-related complications.

Work Hours

12-hour shifts. Tier III Advanced Practitioners work a combination of days and nights or straight nights, including weekdays, weekends, and holiday. APPs on Tier III are expected to work one weekend every four weeks and three holidays a year.

Qualifications

For consideration for this position, candidates must have passed the certification exam for either Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner. For Nurse Practitioner, Acute Care Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification is highly preferred.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs patient care duties in the designated service according to established standards, general and services specific scopes of care, policies and procedures, and patient-specific protocols.
  • Obtains medical, family and social histories, performs physical examinations, orders and interprets diagnostic studies and laboratory tests, diagnoses disease and disease stage, identifies appropriate treatment, participates in implementation.
  • Writes orders as permitted by the Clinical Staff Rules and Regulations, monitors and evaluates patient response to treatment, facilitates referrals, provides support and follow-up to other health care providers, and performs diagnostic procedures as indicated.
  • Collects and records data as required, monitors treatment guideline/clinical research flow sheets, and participates in scholarly dissemination of research data.
  • Collaborates in the development of clinical research flow sheets and assists in the collection, analysis and interpretation of historical patient data.
  • Assists in research by careful collaboration in the development of clinical research objectives and the implementation of, and adherence to clinical trial protocols.
  • Educates patients, families, students and participates in the orientation of new employees, assessing learning needs and abilities, facilitating self‑care, and orienting and precepting advanced practice students, medical residents, nursing visitors, medical and nursing fellows.
  • Maintains current knowledge by attending conferences and meetings at the hospital and off‑site.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care, understanding principles of growth and development for all ages served.
  • Participates in the detection, reporting and improvement of systems to prevent patient care incidents and improve patient safety and quality.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to meet departmental and institutional goals.
  • Participates in elements of care coordination across the continuum.
Minimum Education and/or Training
  • Nurse Practitioner: Master’s degree in nursing required.
  • Physician Assistant: Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation and Review Commission on Physician Assistant Education (ARC‑PA); BLS/PALS/ACLS.
Minimum Experience
  • Pediatrics and hematology and/or oncology experience preferred.
  • Pediatric intensive care experience preferred.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required by Law
  • Nurse Practitioner:
    • Current Advanced Practice Nurse License issued by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing (LC: AP‑TN).
    • Current Tennessee State Board of Nursing license or equivalent State Board license in the state of primary residence.
    • Supervising Physician verified by St. Jude Managed Care Department.
    • Nurse Practitioner Certification from one of the recognized certifying bodies (e.g., ANCC‑NP, AA‑NP, PNCB, CPNP‑AC).
    • Certificate of Fitness:
      State of Tennessee – Division of Health Related Boards.
    • DEA certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Physician Assistant:
    • Licensed by the state of TN Board of Medical Examiners to practice as a physician assistant.
    • Certified by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
    • Supervising Physician verified by St. Jude Managed Care Department.
    • DEA certified within 6 months of employment.
Compensation

The estimated salary range for this role is $104,000 – $186,160 per year for the Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Tier III) in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
