A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who practices both autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of health care providers on the interprofessional team to deliver high‑quality, holistic, evidence‑based anesthesia and pain care services. The CRNA cares for patients at all acuity levels across the lifespan in a variety of settings for procedures including, but not limited to, surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic and pain management.

What you will do
  • Performs and documents the preanesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient. Obtains informed consent for anesthesia and related services.
  • Reviews, requests, and orders laboratory/diagnostic studies.
  • Selects, obtains, orders, and administers preanesthetic medication or treatment.
  • Develops and implements an anesthesia care plan. Provides postanesthesia follow‑up and care.
  • Selects, obtains, prepares, and uses equipment, invasive and non‑invasive monitors, supplies, and medications for the administration of sedation, anesthesia, and pain management services; performs safety checks as needed.
  • Selects, orders, obtains, and administers analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services.
  • Performs all aspects of airway management, including fiber‑optic intubation.
  • Facilitates emergence and recovery for anesthesia by evaluating patient response, and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support to maintain patient stability during transfer.
  • Initiates and administers post‑anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system. Initiates and administers respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the postoperative period.
  • Evaluates the patient’s response to anesthesia and surgery; takes appropriate corrective action during the postanesthesia period.
  • Discharges the patient from the postanesthesia care unit.
  • Implements acute and chronic pain management modalities.
  • Manages emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Places and manages regional anesthetic techniques, as delineated by clinical privileges.
  • Participates in quality improvement and evaluation activities and implements measures to ensure that hospital, DNV, and other quality standards are met.
  • Demonstrates accountability for professional responsibilities and self‑development.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with various clinical staff and other disciplines.
