Responsibilities
  • Apprises Manager, Central Staffing of all activities, pertinent changes in Internal/External market, threats and opportunities in a timely and anticipatory manner and presents action plans for immediate implementation/approval.
  • Coordinate and supervise nursing personnel and patient care during assigned shift and ensure multidisciplinary team communication.
    • Maintains compliance with patient care standards as it relates to the care provided to patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics.
    • Makes rounds and provides managerial presence to ensure planned or required care is being provided in compliance with established hospital policies, procedures, standards of care, and regulatory requirements.
    • Responds to emergency situations coordinating with other health team members.
    • Provides patient assessments and makes recommendations on the care of the patient.
    • Exercises independent judgment and initiative to make decisions pertaining to the management of patient care.
    • Provides “on the spot” orientation and training of staff as needed.
    • Takes disciplinary action as needed at the time of infraction in consultation with the Nurse Manager or Director as necessary.
    • Provides feedback, documentation and recommendation to department managers regarding unit operation, patient care activities, and educational needs of staff.
    • Acts as a resource person for staff and physicians regarding patient care standards and administrative policies and protocols.
    • Functions as staff support, acting as staff relief and providing direct patient care as necessary.
  • Provides and maintains adequate staffing to meet patient care needs by:
    • Procuring necessary staff by utilizing the PRN pool and agencies to maintain appropriate staffing levels for each nursing unit based on patient classification recommendations and central staffing operational guidelines.
    • Cost containment by reducing staff when feasible, especially agency staff.
    • Performing agency licensure verification.
    • Procuring supplies when needed in absence of distribution staff and assuring appropriate security.
  • Coordinates and expedites the admission, discharge and transfer procedures by:
    • Participating in daily bed huddle assessing placement needs and identifying barriers to patient flow.
    • Making bed assignment/placement as necessary based on clinical assessment of patient.
    • Ensures admission and discharge functions are completed with patients updated into the system in a timely fashion.
    • Coordinates the in‑house hospital transfers and transfers from one facility to another.
    • Coordinates emergency transfers of patients to another acute care facility.
  • Administratively coordinate all problem situations which arise during shift:
    • Identify problem, documenting resolution and communicating to appropriate departments.
    • In case of situations requiring it, notifies the Administrator on call for resolution.
    • Takes appropriate action in the event of any patient, employee or visitor injury.
    • Handles family and/or patient complaints and problems.
    • Interprets administrative and personnel policies as needed.
  • Functions on behalf of all ancillary departments when they are closed, procure pharmaceuticals in a timely fashion, procure patient care supplies, coordinate maintenance calls, and coordinate with Respiratory, Lab, and Radiology during off‑hours when necessary. Obtains inpatient and outpatient medical records and other information requested by physicians.
  • Coordinates bereavement activities for families and significant others of hospital patients:
    • Completes appropriate paperwork on death charts to ensure compliance with state, federal, and county regulations.
    • Submits death certificates for all patients sent directly from hospital to Shelby County for burial and files with Department of Health within department’s timeframe.
    • Notifies funeral home, medical examiner's office and/or Pathologist of patient’s death and the need for arrangements to transport deceased.
