The Sr Staff Image Data Scientist is responsible for providing technical design, implementation, and operational health of critical analysis platforms in the assigned department. The role serves as a technology advocate within the St. Jude image analysis community, architecting, designing, and developing image analysis platforms, independently leading engineering discussions, and assessing impacts to overall technology performance. The scientist will engage with leadership and other internal and external experts.
The Neuro Image Analysis core in the Department of Developmental Neurobiology (DNB) at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a team of computational scientists focused on turning image data into biological knowledge. Computational tools are used at the intersection of biology and cutting‑edge microscopy methods to understand how brains are built during development, how neurons function, and how they malfunction in disease.
This position emphasizes time‑series analysis to advance research in calcium imaging, neural and behavioral dynamics, and chromatin dynamics.
- Develop statistical, time‑series, and machine learning techniques to extract meaningful insights from complex biological data (large‑scale neuroimages, light and electron microscopy, animal behavior, histopathology, etc).
- Collaborate with scientists and researchers to design experiments and optimize data acquisition protocols for effective downstream computational analysis.
- Complete end‑to‑end image analysis from pre‑processing and data cleaning to reporting results.
- Stay up‑to‑date with the latest advancements in the field of data science.
- A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or a related field.
- Strong background in statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, or similar languages commonly used in scientific computing.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., Tensor Flow, PyTorch) and high‑performance computing environments is a plus.
- Strong expertise in time‑series analysis, image and signal processing, and data visualization.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment.
- Strong communication skills to effectively convey complex concepts and results to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree plus 8 years of experience required.
- Master's degree plus six (6) years of experience or Ph.D. plus four (4) years of experience preferred.
- Work experience in a relevant area (e.g., applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computer engineering, or a related field).
- Demonstrated technical thought leadership in an applied computational field (e.g., computer vision, deep learning, numerical optimization, image analysis, scientific computing, scientific visualization).
- Substantial experience in image analyses, image data management, and programming (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, Java, C/C++).
- Experience in biological/medical imaging, deep learning, image analysis platforms (e.g., Image
J/Fiji, Cell Profiler), scientific computing, scientific data visualization, scientific code optimization, and evaluation in an HPC environment, development of algorithms, statistical methods, or scientific software, working with large image data volumes, biological/medical imaging preferred. - Proven performance in an earlier role or comparable role.
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $114,400 – $216,320 per year for the role of Sr Staff Image Data Scientist – Developmental Neurobiology.
St. Jude is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
