We are seeking a Scientist to join the Department of Host-Microbe Interactions within the Microbial Biorepository Collaborative Center. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in microbiology, with extensive hands‑on experience in the genetic and phenotypic characterization of diverse bacterial species. A track record of research productivity in bacteriology is required as well as demonstrated leadership and independent research skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with a demonstrated ability to maintain accurate, timely records and manage complex databases and multiple project needs. This role involves close collaboration with both basic scientists and clinical laboratories to support a range of daily experimental activities, including microbial strain cultivation, phenotypic characterization, nucleic acid extraction, whole genome sequencing, and coordination of strain imports and investigator requests.
The ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team in a dynamic lab environment is required.
- Coordinate multiple aspects of research projects and carry out laboratory experiments utilizing various laboratory techniques.
- Determine whether additional or other tools or methods are required.
- Provide input regarding research protocols and experiments.
- Set up protocols and assist in developing new laboratory techniques as required.
- Identify experimental data pertinent to the analysis problem.
- Process, organize, and summarize data, reporting experimental results as required.
- Monitor quality and integrity of recorded information and data.
- Draft sections of research manuscripts.
- Provide basic lab operation support, including equipment maintenance and purchasing.
- Monitor inventory levels and order lab supplies as needed.
- Perform calibration of instruments and equipment.
- Troubleshoot instrument performance and equipment issues.
- Instruct other staff in basic laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific area is required.
- Eight (8) years of relevant work experience is required.
- Six (6) years of relevant work experience is required with a Master’s degree.
- Three (3) years of relevant work experience is required with a PhD.
A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $86,320 - $154,960 per year for the role of Scientist - Microbial Biorepository Collaborative Center (HMI).
