Job Description

Works under the supervision of Memphis Police Academy staff to grasp concepts and perform a wide range of tasks that promote public safety and security.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas and enforce laws.
  • Apprehend and control suspects.
  • Control traffic and give traffic directions.
  • Write incident reports and maintain records and evidence.
  • Provide public information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Provide court testimony.
  • Attend required training and meet mandatory training requirements.
  • Comprehend rules, regulations and policies of MPD Training Academy and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Apply basic criminal investigative principles, practices, and techniques for patrol‑related activities.
  • Use basic interview skills to obtain information from suspects, victims, and witnesses.
  • Operate patrol vehicles and use weapons/equipment safely.
  • Apply defensive tactics in controlling and apprehending suspects.
  • Use minimal levels of force to keep the officer and public safe.
  • Recognize controlled substances and request assistance with materials and paraphernalia.
  • Provide first‑aid assistance during emergencies.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking to solve patrol‑related problems.
  • Maintain tact, courtesy, and confidentiality with law‑enforcement sensitive information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Typical Physical Demands
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Traverse uneven terrain.
  • Perform physically demanding work: bending, stooping, crouching, sitting, standing, running, navigating confined spaces.
  • Lift and carry heavy items up to 100 lbs (with or without assistance).
  • Move a dead weight object up to 175 lbs for training.
  • Maintain strength and dexterity for defensive tactics and firearms training.
  • Operate law‑enforcement tools and equipment (weapons, handcuffs, vehicles, computers, other technology).
Typical Working Conditions
  • Classroom training with exposure to inclement weather.
  • May include rotating shifts and holidays.
  • Potential hazardous conditions in defensive tactics, weapons training, and defensive driving.
  • Use of protective gear when necessary.
Qualifications
  • At least two (2) years as a full‑time, certified (POST‑commissioned) active law enforcement officer, currently employed as a sworn officer.
  • Work record within a commission‑duty agency employing twenty (20) or more paid full‑time officers.
  • No felony convictions or pleas of guilty/Nolo Contendere.
  • At least 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Basic Training Program.
  • Successful completion of entry‑level requirements and testing (physical, written, background investigation, psychological and medical) for Police Recruit.
  • Valid driver license.
  • High school diploma or GED.
