Summary
The Craft Technician is responsible for general maintenance work on Zoo facilities and structures. The Memphis Zoo operates on a 76‑acre campus with approximately 300,000 sq ft of building structures and will perform maintenance tasks in one or more fields: carpentry; electrical; HVAC; plumbing or painting.
Essential Functions- Responsible for performing routine building maintenance tasks in one or more fields (e.g., carpentry; electrical; HVAC; plumbing, etc.).
- Inspects buildings and other structures to determine functional systems and detect malfunctions and needed repair, making notes and recommendations using a pre‑established check sheet.
- Performs minor electrical maintenance to include but not be limited to replacement or repair of fixtures using the appropriate hand, power, and specialty tools.
- Performs minor plumbing maintenance (e.g., replacement or repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging of drains, trenching and laying new lines, replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices, etc.).
- Performs minor painting, carpentry, and masonry work.
- Reconfigures, installs, positions, and remounts items in public areas, offices and animal enclosures (e.g., wall panels, storage bins, lighting, cabinets, gates, railings, etc.).
- Prepares the surfaces and paints various structures and equipment (e.g., walls, evaporative coolers, floors, roofs, doors, restroom facilities, etc.) to preserve wood and metal parts from corrosion and maintain a safe, comfortable working environment using various painting equipment and related tools.
- Cleans air conditioning and heating units (e.g., coils, condensate pans, drain lines, cooling towers, etc.) to ensure units are operating properly and at peak performance.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Reporting StructureReports to Maintenance Manager.
Position Type / Expected Hours of WorkFull‑time 40 hours per week. The position requires flexible hours, frequent weekend work, and availability for after‑hour emergencies.
Minimum Requirements- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 2–3 years of relevant experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the job.

Previous work experience completing general maintenance work on a campus environment.
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud when on zoo grounds.
Physical DemandsFrequent sitting, talking and hearing. Constant use of hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral and color vision; ability to adjust focus.
