Under the general supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor, installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, calibrates, tests, operates and maintains chilled water, steam, condensate, domestic and heating water, medical gas, fire protection, computerized tube and DI water systems, the hospital’s medical infectious waste incinerators and mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, fans, air handling units, variable frequency drives and air compressors. Changes light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, as directed.

Oversees and trains Maintenance Mechanics and Maintenance Helpers in these areas of expertise. May be called upon to weld and fabricate metal components, if trained to do so.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic. Performs routine predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance on a variety of mechanical equipment and systems in hospital, administrative and research lab locations. This includes installation, startup and testing of new equipment and rebuilding existing equipment. Responds to unscheduled equipment failures and performs emergency shutdown and/or
    -start-up procedures to ensure continuity of operation of critical systems and components. Works independently, with other mechanics, with other crafts and contractor personnel, to quickly and effectively perform routine and emergency maintenance in a fast paced, high volume work environment. Uses hand and/or power tools to fabricate, repair and trouble shoot mechanical equipment and systems. Uses job‑related tools and equipment to perform quality work.

    Measures parts and equipment for ordering replacement materials or parts fabrication. Trouble‑shoots equipment using appropriate analysis methods. Reads and interprets job‑related schematics and drawings and manufacturer’s operations and maintenance manuals. Operates and maintains the hospital’s medical infectious waste incinerator, and deionized and reverse osmosis water systems. May be called upon to perform minor locksmithing duties. Establishes and maintains a harmonious working relationship with clinical and research staff, and other FOM department personnel.

    Adheres to institutional and departmental administrative safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs more complex repairs and maintenance duties, including, but not limited to: tears‑down and rebuilds water pumps, medical gas pumps and compressors, vacuum systems, and air compressors; replaces and tests circuit boards for variable frequency drives; repairs electrical control circuits; replaces electrical components, such as motors, relays and electronic circuit boards; welds various types of metals using appropriate welding methods (including TIG, MIG and Stick), if properly trained;

    performs predictive maintenance (infrared scans, ultrasonic testing and laser alignment) on major plant equipment; assists with performing maintenance on autoclaves and other process equipment.
  • Interprets and clarifies work requests and determines materials and parts required for job completion. Complies with departmental, institutional, local, and national regulatory codes. Draws sketches, when necessary, to ensure clear understanding of task requirements. Provides accurate project schedules and cost estimates.
  • Serves as a knowledge resource for Maintenance Mechanics and Maintenance Helpers. Assists and trains less experienced personnel to resolve more complex maintenance issues.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Education and/or Training
  • High school diploma/GED required
Minimum Experience
  • Six (6) years of experience as a mechanic, at the journeyman or equivalent level, are required
  • Experience must include four (4) years of working on steam, condensate, pneumatic, and domestic and hot water systems
  • Experience in a hospital or related environment preferred
