Job Description
General Motors seeks qualified Mechanical Journey persons (millwrights, pipe fitters, toolmakers, and machine repairmen) who can work independently, apply problem‑solving skills, and handle multiple job assignments across a shift. This role requires experience with planned maintenance systems, predictive technologies, industrial robotics, automation, and conveyance systems.
Primary Responsibilities- Follow established safety procedures according to OSHA standards and company procedures.
- Maintain, dismantle, repair, and replace mechanical and hydraulic components such as bearings, seals, carriers, shafting, motors, generators, air compressors, engines, pumps, cylinders, gears, couplings, linkages, ball screws, high‑speed CNC spindles, coolant systems, filters, combustion equipment, and valves on industrial machinery.
- Lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain, and repair piping systems.
- Use hand or power tools to measure, cut, thread, groove, bend, solder, assemble, join, and install pipes, valves, and fittings.
- Read and interpret blueprints for conveyor systems, material handling systems, robots, and other automation.
- Operate mobile equipment (forklifts, vertical lifts, cranes) and determine loading requirements for rigging and lifting.
- Set up and operate conventional or CNC machine tools (lathes, milling machines, grinders) to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
- Fabricate punches, tools, steel‑rule tools, and t‑sets to exact specifications.
- Plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools or assemblies using blueprints, sketches, or models.
- Determine the quality of finished products by verifying dimensions, alignment, and clearances with measuring instruments (calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, dial indicators) to ensure defect‑free parts.
- Completion of a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship certificate in a mechanical trade (millwright, pipefitter, toolmaker, machine repair) or at least six years of documented mechanical trade experience.
- Ability to complete GM’s hiring process, including comprehensive assessments, hair drug testing, and a background check.
- Minimum age 18 and eligibility to work in the United States.
- Willingness to work flexible shift hours, including day, afternoon, night, overtime, daily, weekend, and holiday shifts with little notice.
- For Journey persons in Training, compensation ranges from $37.64–$43.91 per hour;
Journey persons receive $44.81 per hour. Certificates, credentials, and interview scoring determine final status and pay.
- Quick response to safety instructions, alarms, and signals.
- Ability to work and stand for extended periods.
- Comfortably wear personal protective equipment.
- Navigate a busy environment and bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and reach.
- May need to lift or carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional sitting during certain tasks.
- Drive mobile equipment when needed.
