As the Bore Operator
, you will ultimately be responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and other heavy equipment to support underground utility construction projects safely and efficiently. You will perform boring operations, support underground installation activities, and ensure equipment is properly maintained while delivering high-quality construction services. As the Bore Operator, your customers are construction crews, project managers, telecommunications clients, and utility partners, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and dependable project execution.
- Operate horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment and other heavy machinery in compliance with company safety policies and procedures
- Load, unload, transport, set up, and safely operate assigned construction equipment
- Perform daily inspections, preventative maintenance, and documentation for assigned equipment
- Operate heavy equipment around active underground utilities while preventing utility strikes
- Walk bore paths before drilling to identify utilities, obstacles, and develop safe drilling plans
- Install conduit through directional boring operations while maintaining project specifications
- Assist with conduit placement in open trenches, proofing conduits, potholing existing utilities, concrete placement, and asphalt restoration
- Utilize shoring systems and perform rigging and setting of structures as required
- Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding job progress, equipment status, and project needs
- Inspect and maintain tools, equipment, and job sites to ensure safe operations
- Adhere to all company policies, OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and safety procedures
- Work overtime and weekends as business needs require
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid driver's license
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or willingness to obtain
- DOT Medical Card required
- Minimum one (1) year of experience operating locating equipment to identify underground utilities
- Experience operating heavy equipment near active underground utilities
- Experience operating bore machines, vacuum trucks, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, asphalt rollers, and similar construction equipment
- Experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment preferred
- Experience and knowledge of basic shoring methods
- Ability to safely operate heavy construction equipment
- Knowledge of underground utility locate systems
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and company safety procedures
- Basic computer proficiency
- Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with supervisors and field crews
- Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain assigned equipment
- Ability to work overtime and weekends as business needs require
- Experience supporting underground utility or telecommunications construction projects
- Experience operating directional drilling equipment in utility construction
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement
- Experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, push, pull, and twist for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
