Duties

The incumbent is responsible for general laborer duties which generally consist of keeping hydro plant buildings and grounds in clean and orderly condition; assisting plant maintenance crews, and other duties as assigned. Incumbent will be working around rotating equipment such as in wheel pits.

The incumbent is responsible for picking up and removing trash and garbage; sweeping and mopping floors, stairwells and walls; setting up meeting rooms; and performing worksite cleanup duties. The incumbent uses simple machines such as scrubbers, polishers, and pressures washers. The incumbent assists in assembly and disassembly, packing and unpacking, crating and uncrating of equipment, components, and other materials. The incumbent assists in loading and unloading plant deliveries.

The incumbent operates plant vehicles, forklifts and aerial lifts in performance of duties. The incumbent uses computers for receiving and sending information, computer based training, entering time, and interfacing with the work management system.

Under direction, may assist with other hydro plant work in which they are qualified to perform safely and efficiently, such as incidental construction and minor maintenance, and serve as a member of gate operations crew. The incumbent periodically uses basic hand tools, and portable electric and gas operated power tools. The incumbent cleans and neatly stores away tools and plant equipment such as cribbing, chokers, and ladders, and reports needed maintenance to supervisor.

As directed, the incumbent may lubricate equipment and replace disposable parts and materials.

May act as confined space, vital door and foreign material exclusion attendant; and as fire watch. May perform routine fire equipment inspections including booster pumps and flushing hydrants; scaffold inspections;
Class B dam safety and civil inspections; and environmental inspections as well as assisting in handling environmental and other wastes in accordance with State and Federal regulations.

Qualifications

The incumbent must be physically qualified and able to work off ladders, scaffolds and high places.

Must be willing to perform heavy work both indoors and outdoors in all weather. Must be willing and able to work irregular hours and days as the work load demands. Must know and understand precautions to be taken with regard to working in an industrial environment to prevent injury and equipment damage. TVA Hydro Electric Generating Station experience required. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to safely drive a medium duty truck. Must have a high school education or equivalent, or be able to read, write and comprehend. Must maintain TSP-613 Authorized Employee clearance training and other required training in accordance to the position.

Supervision Received

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Hydro Plant Manager or foreman, and may be assigned work by other craft workers such as Hydro Technician IV. The work is performed without close supervision but in accordance with definite schedules of work, all plant procedures, safe work practices, and any specific instructions as outlined by the supervisor.
